Responsibilities

  • Support in the maintenance, implementation and continuous improvement of the corporate ESMS ensuring the adequate cascading across all AE portfolio of projects at all stages.
  • Responsible for the overseeing the development and leading the review process of Project-specific ESMSs to be developed by Contractors for each asset, to ensure alignment with ESIA, ESAP, Employer requirements, Investors and Lenders’ requirements
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of international, regional and local environmental and social standards and legislation and the rapidly evolving ESG frameworks and requirements
  • Coordinate/interface with internal resources or external consultants accordingly
  • Support in the required tasks to obtain and maintain ISO certifications


Environmental and Social Studies and Assessments

  • Conduct E&S screening assessments of potential investment opportunities at origination stage
  • Conduct E&S due diligence assessments, both internally and coordinating third party assessments by E&S consultants of potential investment opportunities whether at development, construction or operational phase
  • Support in the preparation of tenders, evaluation of proposals and selection of specialised E&S consultants to perform ESIA studies and other related studies for projects
  • Coordinate the tasks of the E&S consultants, monitor the progress of the ESIA process and review deliverables, to ensure Project requirements are fulfilled on time, budget and with the right quality and up to the required standards (Corporate requirements and Lender standards)
  • Support in the interface with Lenders E&S teams and Lenders E&S advisors
  • Coordinate required E&S activities at country level, directing local E&S representatives including travel to the respective Project sites to support on E&S management and oversight
  • Preparation of E&S components of tender submissions


Project Planning & Operations

  • Provide early environmental and social support with planning and relevant consent applications
  • Oversee and monitor E&S performance of Turbine Supplier, Balance of Plant (BOP), EPC and O&M contractors through site inspections, progress meetings, review of documentation and performance indicators for Projects under construction and operation
  • Oversee the process followed by the Contractor to identify, correct and prevent incidents, accidents, non-conformances and grievances
  • Developing monthly, quarterly and annual E&S internal and external monitoring reports
  • Strong liaison with the Project team at Corporate level, Country level and Project level
  • Work closely with internal (QHSE, technical, investments, contracts, legal) & external stakeholders to identify and address E&S risks, and material & emerging issues
  • Coordinate required E&S activities at country level, directing local E&S representatives
  • Communicate project requirements, environmental & social procedures and standards to relevant parties and oversee its implementation
  • Balance works to be completed internally or sub-contracted


Social Development & Investment

  • Support on the development of the ‘social investment’ strategy in line with best international practice and specific operating guidelines (e.g. in human rights, community development framework, stakeholder engagement strategy), aligned with the Company’s Sustainability Strategy, goals and values
  • Support with the identification, assessment of feasibility, development and implementation of social investment initiatives and projects across AE portfolio inclusive of activity steps, resourcing and budget requirements and timelines
  • Manage and monitor the successful implementation of social investment initiatives whilst providing guidance, direction and supervision of local E&S representatives and support them on engagement with local communities including but not limited consultation and disclosure events, community meetings, evaluating, reporting and resolving community grievances and providing feedback to the communities on issues
  • Participate and monitor the implementation of stakeholder engagement plans
  • Establish collaborative and positive relationships with different stakeholders and particularly with local communities and Project affected people (PAPs)
  • Promote awareness of social responsibility within the organisation by involving employees, ensuring both management and staff are informed of status of socio-economic development initiatives
  • Promote awareness of social responsibility beyond the organisation and promote the establishment of partnerships with other stakeholder groups in the development and delivery of such social investment initiatives and beyond


Qualifications, Experience & Job Specific Skills

  • Degree in Environmental discipline, Engineering, International Development, Sustainability or equivalent experience
  • Master’s degree in relevant subject


Preferred Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar role
  • Previous experience with an E&S Consultancy of reference, a Developer, and/or Development Financial Institution
  • Extensive experience working with IFC Performance Standards on Environmental & Social Sustainability and E&S frameworks of development financial institutions and/or multilateral banks
  • Significant proven experience in the development of ESMS including environmental, health & Safety, labour, social and quality management plans
  • Significant experience in front-end environmental and social studies and assessments, in wind and solar PV technologies
  • Previous experience in emerging markets is a must, preferably in MENA and/or Western Balkans

  • Strong sense of ethics and integrity
  • Passionate about environmental protection and socio-economic development, strong affinity working with communities and understanding of cultural sensitivities
  • Have a profound understanding of business impact on society/ecosystems and vice versa through previous multi-disciplinary experience (e.g. NGO, government and corporate)
  • Proficient in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Other spoken languages (e.g. Arabic, Turkish, Serbian) and current valid driving license are desirable
