Job Duties

If you are goal oriented, have a passion for wildlife, with a strong background in field work, then the Wildlife Biologist with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is the job for you! As a Wildlife Biologist, you will manage wildlife in the Fillmore and Beaver District by collecting biological data, making hunt recommendations and resolving conflicts between humans and wildlife. You will also create and strengthen local partnerships with members of the public, private landowners, public land users and user groups, conservation organizations, and state and federal government agencies.

Key Responsibilities

Day To Day Responsibilities Of This Position

  • Collect and review biological data and get to know the wildlife resources in your district
  • Make innovative hunt recommendations that allow for increased hunter opportunity
  • Write and review Species Management Plans that allow for species sustainability
  • Work with a team of other DWR Employees to implement the priorities of the Wildlife Section
  • Implement the core values of the DWR
  • Assist private landowners, conservation groups, and state and federal government agencies with wildlife challenges and opportunities
  • Assist the region in big picture mule deer recovery, supporting local mule deer working groups, collaring efforts/ mortalities summaries, mule deer recovery studies, evaluating regional conservation leases.

Qualifications

Minimum or "day-one" qualifications:

  • BS Degree or higher in Wildlife Science or closely related field or directly related work experience equivalent
  • Knowledge of principles, theories and practices of wildlife sciences, wildlife ecology and habitat requirements
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form with other DWR employees, private landowners, conservation groups and other government agencies
  • Ability to work independently and with UDWR employees, other government employees, the public and to deal with difficult people on occasion
  • Previous experience with terrestrial wildlife management and a demonstrated knowledge of Utahs wildlife conservation programs

Preferred Or Trainable/on-the-job Qualifications

  • Ability to develop and write management plans
  • Experience in public speaking
  • Experience with chemical immobilization and other trapping and immobilizing techniques
  • Safe firearm use
  • Ability to safely pull trailers and operate ATVs/UTVs/snowmobiles
  • Current employment with UDWR

Work Environment, Working Conditions, Physical Requirements

Moderate physical requirement. Field work requires some physical exertion such as walking over rough terrain, snow covered or rocky surfaces, and lifting of heavy items. Field work also requires the ability to hike long distances in isolated and rough country. Habitat development work requires long days outside in adverse weather conditions. Working some nights, weekends and holidays as necessary or in emergency situations. Occasional risks that are found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental situations (e.g., depredation, wildlife management projects, check stations, working with heavy farm equipment or driving airboats). Overnight travel within Utah is sometimes required to attend meetings, conferences, support wildlife management projects, etc.

Work Schedule: 80 hours every 2 weeks

  • Employee must live within immediate response time to their district
