Job Description

An Ultrasound Technician, also known as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, plays a critical role in the medical field by using ultrasound equipment to capture images and assist in the diagnosis of various medical conditions. They work closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide detailed imaging needed for patient diagnosis and treatment. Ultrasound Technicians must have a deep understanding of anatomy and sonographic principles to produce accurate and high-quality images. They often specialize in specific areas such as abdominal, obstetricians/gynecology, cardiac, or vascular sonography. As a crucial member of the healthcare team, an Ultrasound Technician is expected to demonstrate precision, attention to detail, and compassion towards patients while maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive information.


Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain ultrasound equipment to produce high-quality diagnostic images.
  • Prepare patients for ultrasound exams by explaining procedures and answering questions.
  • Adjust equipment controls according to the specific examination and patient needs.
  • Review and analyze ultrasound images to ensure clarity and diagnostic quality.
  • Document and record patient information, examination results, and any variations detected.
  • Coordinate with physicians to provide results and discuss findings of examinations.
  • Specialize in conducting ultrasound imaging for particular body parts or conditions.
  • Ensure a safe and clean environment by adhering to infection control protocols.
  • Keep up-to-date with continuing education requirements to maintain licensure and certifications.
  • Participate in quality assurance processes to improve patient care standards.
  • Assist with patient positioning and provide comfort during the ultrasound exams.
  • Conduct routine maintenance checks of ultrasound equipment to ensure functionality.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited diagnostic medical sonography program is required.
  • Certification through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
  • Strong understanding of sonographic physics, anatomy, and medical terminology.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for patient interaction.
  • Attention to detail and ability to analyze images for diagnostic purposes.
  • Physical stamina and strength to assist patients in positioning during exams.
  • Able to work independently and make decisions on sonographic image quality.
