Job Description

The Wall Street Journal is seeking a seasoned journalist to cover China, the worlds second-largest economy and a rising geopolitical rival to the U.S. China is in the midst of great transformation, converting decades of economic strength into geopolitical might. Beijing is increasingly willing to throw its weight around on the global stage, and has shown its ability to lead the world in artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, semiconductors and other future technologies.

At the same time, it faces internal contradictions -- an economy that has seen its growth slow to its lowest rate in years, falling profitability across its corporate landscape and a generation of young people pessimistic about their future. Meanwhile, Xi Jinping, the country’s strongest leader since the 1980s, is steadily consolidating his power. Having overseen waves of purges that have reached even his top generals, he looks set to rule indefinitely.

The Journal is looking for an experienced reporter who can capture these cross-currents and make sense of Chinas evolving place on the global stage. The reporter will seek to capture the dynamism but also the profound challenges that the country faces. The ideal candidate would be able to take stock of the country, its ambitions and its vulnerabilities in the economic, political and military realms as we head toward a possible fourth term of Xi’s rule.

You will:

  • Identify emerging big-picture themes across Chinas political, economic and societal landscape, delivering stories with sweep and heft.
  • Break news and provide analysis on developments across politics, the economy, society, geopolitics and military affairs.
  • Report deeply on long-term changes in Chinas mood, political climate, economic condition and demography.
  • Combine what limited access one is able to get through on-the-ground reporting with bigger-picture insights derived from data, surveys, online discourse and expert analysis.
  • Tell stories in ways that resonate with readers: through tightly written news pieces, ambitious enterprise, investigations, visuals, and collaborations with video, audio and graphics teams.
  • Work closely with colleagues across Asia, the U.S. and Europe to conceive and lead globe-spanning coverage at the intersection of economics, geopolitics and business.
  • Develop a strong network of sources in government, business, finance, academia and policy circles and draw on that network to produce exclusive, agenda-setting journalism.

You have:

  • A proven track record of high-impact reporting on politics, economics, business, or China, ideally for a major news organization.
  • The ability to move quickly on breaking news while maintaining accuracy, clarity and a strong sense of what matters most for readers.
  • Experience boiling down complex and at times contradictory data points and evidence to find insight and clarity.
  • The ability to craft narratives and tell compelling stories that are firmly grounded in rigorous reporting and brought to life with vivid writing.
  • An ability to look across narrow areas of coverage, seeing how the biggest news stories span politics, economics, society, military affairs and geopolitics.
  • Strong enterprise skills: you can originate, pitch and execute ambitious projects as well as contribute to larger team efforts.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, and comfort working across time zones and coverage areas.
  • A deep curiosity about China’s role in the global economy and an instinct for spotting stories where geopolitics and money collide.
  • Chinese language skills are a plus, but not required.

To apply, please submit your resume and a cover letter explaining how you would approach the job by May 30th. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and we encourage early submission as the position may be filled before the deadline.
