Job Description

The Chiller Engineer is responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of chiller plants and associated HVAC systems to ensure reliable, energy-efficient, and safe cooling operations.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain water-cooled and air-cooled chillers (centrifugal, screw, scroll, reciprocating).
  • Perform routine, preventive, and predictive maintenance on chillers, cooling towers, pumps, AHUs, FCUs, and associated equipment.
  • Monitor and maintain chilled water and condenser water systems.
  • Ensure proper refrigerant management, oil analysis, and system cleanliness.
  • Maintain equipment as per OEM recommendations and maintenance schedules.
  • Diagnose and rectify faults in chillers, compressors, control panels, sensors, and valves.
  • Handle issues related to refrigerant leaks, low efficiency, abnormal vibrations, high pressure trips, and temperature deviations.
  • Respond to breakdowns and emergency calls with minimal downtime.
  • Coordinate major repairs and overhauls with OEMs and service contractors.
  • Monitor and operate chillers through BMS/SCADA systems.
  • Optimize chiller sequencing, load sharing, and staging for energy efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot PLC, VFDs, actuators, and control logic related to chiller plants.
  • Analyze chiller plant performance (COP, kW/TR).
  • Implement energy-saving initiatives such as set-point optimization and equipment upgrades.
  • Support energy audits and continuous improvement programs.
  • Ensure compliance with green building and energy standards where applicable.
  • Follow all EHS standards, including refrigerant handling and pressure systems safety.
  • Ensure compliance with local regulations, statutory codes, and industry standards (ASHRAE, ISO, etc.).
  • Maintain accurate documentation, logs, and safety records.
  • Maintain daily operation logs, maintenance records, and breakdown reports.
  • Prepare technical reports, root cause analysis (RCA), and corrective action plans.
  • Support audits and inspections.
  • Supervise technicians and contractors during maintenance and shutdowns.
  • Provide technical guidance and on-the-job training to junior staff. Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, and facility teams.

Qualifications

  • Diploma / Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or HVAC Engineering
  • Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning certification preferred
  • Valid refrigerant handling license (as per local regulations)
