Job Description

Description

Zutari: Co-creating an engineered impact.

Zutari is a well-established, management-owned engineering firm with almost 90 years experience. As human-centred engineering consultants and advisors, we are trusted by our clients, business partners, communities and other stakeholders across Africa.

We co-create engineering solutions that have a positive impact and improve peoples lives. Zutari values inclusion and recognises the importance of a diverse, talented workforce, believing that people need other people to succeed.

What kind of talent do we pursue?

We employ people with the right attitude and a positive mindset, who are motivated by doing the right thing, getting things done and share a sense of urgency. People who have an impact in our teams and broader community. People who think differently and connect with those around them to co-create new opportunities and leave a meaningful legacy.

Role Responsibilities

Role Overview

The BIM Modeller plays a central role in delivering a complete, coordinated, and construction-ready digital representation of transport infrastructure, primarily structures such as bridges. The engineering team develops the design intent; the BIM Modeller then translates that intent into an accurate, contextual 3D digital model that reflects what will be constructed in the real environment.

The BIM model is the primary information container for design data and increasingly forms a core part of the final design deliverable. The role may be fulfilled by specialist BIM Modellers, technicians/technologists, or suitably qualified engineers with strong structural discipline knowledge and BIM capability.

Responsibilities

3D Digital Build (Authoring & Modelling)

  • Build and maintain the 3D model using the agreed authoring platform(s) to accurately capture the structural design and associated information.
  • Produce computations/quantities where appropriately qualified and required.

Context, Interfaces & Constructability

  • Model with a strong understanding of context (terrain, corridors, constraints) and key interfaces (utilities, highways, drainage, rail, geotechnical, architectural).
  • Perform regular interference checks and maintain focus on buildability during the digital build.

Standards, LOIN & Zutari Baselines

  • Work with the BIM Coordinator to ensure the required Zutari baseline LOIN is achieved.
  • Use approved object templates, libraries, naming conventions, and configuration files.

Information Quality & Metadata

  • Collaborate with engineers/designers to ensure all required information is captured.
  • Add metadata not auto-generated, ensuring high accuracy, consistency, and completeness.

Coordination & Collaboration (Multidisciplinary)

  • Support the project BIM collaboration strategy as defined in the Zutmap.
  • Take ownership of multi-disciplinary interface coordination relevant to the structural model.

Delivery to MIDP/TIDP Cadence

  • Deliver agreed modelling outputs in line with the MIDP and TIDP, maintaining the required cadence for model federation and information exchange through the CDE.

Compliance to BEP/EIR

  • Ensure ongoing adherence to the BEP and client EIRs, including naming, suitability, issue/approval workflows, and information exchange formats.

2D Detailing & Documentation

  • Prepare coordinated 2D drawings and detailing outputs derived from the model, including annotations, views, standard details, notes, legends, sheets, layouts, and revision control.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience: 5–10 years’ industry experience in architecture, engineering, or construction, ideally on transport infrastructure structures (bridges).
  • BIM Capability: Advanced modelling, federation, and information management skills; multi-disciplinary modelling capability is advantageous.
  • Standards: Strong knowledge of ISO 19650 (and related information management practices). (Please confirm “ISO 7817” as it may be a typo—often ISO 16739 (IFC) / ISO 29481 (IDM) / ISO 12006 are referenced in BIM contexts.)
  • Software: Proficient in Autodesk and/or Bentley toolsets (e.g., Revit/Civil 3D/Navisworks/InfraWorks; OpenBuildings / OpenRoads / OpenBridge / iTwin as applicable).
  • Advantageous Tools: Plannerly, Solibri, BIMcollab, Dynamo, Python.

We believe that a diverse work force is key to our business success. We seek the best people for our jobs based on their skills, qualifications, and experience. We embrace the principle of equal opportunity in employment, and we work towards eliminating all forms of unlawful discrimination in our employment practices
