About The Role
Were looking for a Research Fellow within the R&D organization focused on supporting our advanced reactor programs. You will support a variety of research and development activities for the eVinci Microreactor heat pipe development program and other research projects at our 51 Bridge Street facility in Pittsburgh, PA. This is a temporary position aligned with the Westinghouse Intern program for onboarding, duration, and offboarding.
Key Responsibilities
Support leading, planning, sponsoring, executing test and development programs throughout all phases of the design process
Hands-on fabrication and assembly of prototype fixtures and equipment
Support heat pipe research and developing novel manufacturing processes and equipment
Collaborate with design, analysis, testing, and manufacturing teams to identify design features which require substantiation through prototyping.
Develop and implement design requirements, test plans, specifications, and procedures following quality assurance program requirements
Perform and execute prototyping and validation experiments in compliance with quality assurance and safety requirements
Technical writing, including development of technical reports
Reduce and analyze large datasets using Matlab, DIAdem, or Mathcad
Design test articles and first of a kind prototypes using standard engineering practices and finite element analysis
Research, design, and selection of equipment and instrumentation for test facility applications
Prepare detailed sketches, 3D models, and drawings using Auto Cad, Inventor, and Solidworks
Develop control and data acquisition systems for instruments and equipment using Labview or other PLC control systems
Hands-on installation and troubleshooting of instrumentation and equipment controls
Integrate testing efforts with modeling and analysis
Qualifications:
A bachelors degree in mechanical, electro-mechanical, or aerospace engineering
Pursuing a Ph.D in Mechanical, Electro-Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering
Extensive post-baccalaureate research focused on thermodynamics, fluid systems, and heat transfer
3-5 years professional experience working in a lab/testing environment (academic or industry lab)
Prior experience of laboratory chemical hygiene practices
Experience designing and fabricating experimental test setups and DAQ systems
Experience of instrumentation error propagation analyses
Experience in 3D modeling and drafting software (Inventor or Solidworks)
Experience in thermal-structural design analysis considering material systems of varying thermal expansion
Experience with finite element analysis using ANSYS workbench
Pressure, temperature, and fluid flow instrumentation experience
Working knowledge of NI Labview or comparable DAQ systems
Experience with ultra/high vacuum applications involving design and selection of pumping systems and materials at room and high temperature conditions
We are committed to transparency and equity in all of our people practices. The hourly rate for this position, which is dependent upon experience, qualifications and skills, is estimated to be $22.69 to $32.00 per hour.
