The Mechanical Checker is responsible for the verification, validation, and approval of engineering drawings, 3D models, and associated documentation. The role ensures full compliance with design intent, applicable engineering standards, and customer requirements, safeguarding design integrity, manufacturability, safety, and configuration control across mechanical systems and components.
Key Responsibilities
Verify and approve 2D mechanical drawings and 3D CAD models for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with design intent.
Ensure all drawings conform to BS 8888, GD&T, ISO/ASME standards, and internal drafting procedures.
Validate dimensions, tolerances, datum structures, fits, surface finishes, and material specifications.
Review parts and assemblies to confirm functionality, interface integrity, clearances, tolerance stack-ups, and manufacturability.
Enforce drawing standards, symbology, technical presentation, and drafting conventions across the drawing office.
Ensure compliance with defence, aerospace, and customer-specific engineering specifications and requirements.
Check engineering change documentation, drawing revisions, and release notes for accuracy, traceability, and configuration control.
Manage and approve documentation and lifecycle states within Windchill PLM, ensuring correct revision and approval workflows.
Identify design errors, inconsistencies, or technical risks and provide clear corrective guidance to engineering teams.
Participate in design reviews, technical assurance activities, and engineering governance gates.
Support audit readiness and compliance relating to drawing control, technical documentation, and configuration management.
Mentor and support junior engineers and draughtspersons in the effective use of Creo and Windchill, promoting best practice and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Requirements
National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical qualification
Proven industry experience in mechanical engineering or design checking roles
Defence or regulated industry background advantageous
Knowledge of MIL and/or aerospace standards beneficial
Experience
Minimum 15+ years of relevant experience within the Engineering industry with Significant exposure to mechanical design, detailing, or drawing office environments
Previous experience as a Checker, Senior Draughtsman, or Design Engineer is highly beneficial
Experience within defence, aerospace, precision engineering, or other high-reliability industries is strongly preferred
