Job Description

Sulzer is a leading engineering company with a proud heritage of innovation. Join our global team to grow your expertise and develop innovative solutions that enable a prosperous and more sustainable society.

About The Role

At Sulzer, we keep the world’s most critical rotating equipment performing at its best—combining deep engineering expertise with advanced repair technologies to extend the life, reliability, and efficiency of gas turbines, steam turbines, compressors, and aero‑derivative turbine systems. Whether based in Venlo, Aberdeen, or Abu Dhabi, you’ll join a global network recognised for its excellence in hot‑gas‑path component repair, turbine overhauls, and industry‑leading aeroderivative capability. Our advantage lies in our unique blend of independent OEM‑agnostic expertise, decades of specialised turbine engineering, and the ability to deliver rapid, high‑quality solutions that keep critical assets operating longer, cleaner, and more efficiently.

Due to an upcoming retirement, we are seeking a Senior Materials Engineer with deep expertise in hot‑end rotating components and advanced nickel‑based superalloys used in high‑temperature aerospace and turbomachinery applications. The ideal candidate will bring strong insight into material behaviour under extreme thermal and mechanical conditions, along with a proven ability to diagnose and prevent complex failure modes across critical rotating hardware.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the subject-matter expert for nickel superalloy selection, processing, and performance in hot-section rotating components.
  • Lead and support failure investigations, identifying root causes related to fatigue, creep, oxidation, corrosion, casting defects, and high‑temperature degradation mechanisms.
  • Provide technical guidance throughout casting process development, including alloy melt practice, grain structure control, defect analysis, and supplier capability assessments.
  • Drive and support cast part qualification, including specification development, material property validation, microstructural evaluation, and buy-off of supplier manufacturing routes.
  • Collaborate closely with design, quality, and suppliers to ensure materials and processes meet performance, reliability, and regulatory requirements.
  • Use metallurgical analysis tools (e.g., SEM/EDS, optical microscopy, fractography, mechanical testing) to assess component condition and ensure product integrity.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or a related advanced discipline.
  • Advanced knowledge of nickel‑based superalloys, high‑temperature materials science, and rotating component lifing considerations.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with hot-end failure analysis across aerospace, industrial gas turbine, or similar high‑performance sectors.
  • Demonstrated success in casting process oversight and supporting full‑lifecycle cast part qualifications.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work cross‑functionally with engineering, operations, suppliers, and leadership teams.

What we offer you

  • Chance to make a significant impact and drive the global strategy across the Services structure.
  • Collaborative and supportive work environment with a focus on innovation and excellence.
  • Competitive salary package with attractive benefits
  • Exciting opportunities for professional growth and advancement in a dynamic and evolving industry.
  • Opportunities for global travel.

Sulzer is an equal opportunity employer. We believe in the strength of a diverse workforce and are committed to offering an inclusive work environment.

We are proud to be recognized as a Top Employer 2026 in Brazil, Canada, China, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Switzerland, South Africa, the UK and the USA.
