Job Description

The Quality Inspector Welding is responsible for ensuring all welding and piping activities comply with project specifications, international codes, and quality standards. The role involves inspection of materials, weld joints, and assemblies; coordination of NDT activities; and verification of documentation to ensure that project deliverables meet design and safety requirements.


 Key Responsibilities:



  • Review Project Specifications, Procedures, Inspection Test Plans (ITPs), and Method Statements to familiarize with project-specific quality and technical requirements.

  • Perform material inspections, review Material Test Certificates (MTCs) for base metals and welding consumables, verify traceability, and confirm compliance with approved specifications.

  • Conduct fit-up and weld visual inspections, check dimensional tolerances, joint preparations, and verify alignment of assemblies against approved fabrication drawings and isometrics.

  • Inspect weld size, profile, and quality, mark weld defects, and provide guidance to welders and supervisors to ensure workmanship meets project standards.

  • Verify the use of applicable Welding Procedure Specification (WPS), confirm welding process parameters, consumable control, and adherence to essential variables.

  • Monitor and record welding progress, welder performance, and issue Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) requests in accordance with line class and project requirements.

  • Coordinate and follow up with NDT subcontractors for radiography, ultrasonic, magnetic particle, and dye penetrant testing activities; review and approve NDT reports.

  • Liaise with Clients, EPC Contractors, and Third-Party Inspectors for review, witnessing, and approval of welding documentation such as Preliminary WPS (PWPS), WPS, PQR, and NDT reports.

  • Ensure calibration and maintenance of inspection instruments such as bridge cam gauges, hi-lo gauges, taper gauges, thermometers, clamp meters, pressure gauges, and pressure/temperature recorders.

  • Identify and issue Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) or Corrective Action Reports (CARs) for defective works; coordinate and verify weld repairs and closeout of punch items.

  • Participate in line walkdowns, prepare and update weld maps, punch lists, and coordinate for Client/Contractor inspections, testing, and final certification of works.

  • Witness and verify welder qualification tests, NDT tests, mechanical testing, hydrostatic and pneumatic testing, flushing/drying operations, and reinstatement of piping systems.


 Technical Skills & Competencies:



  • Comprehensive knowledge of welding processes (SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, SAW) and their field applications.

  • Strong understanding of welding metallurgy, weld defects, and acceptance criteria.

  • Skilled in interpretation of NDT reports and corrective measures for non-conforming welds.

  • Familiar with ASME, AWS, API, ASTM, and ISO codes and standards relevant to piping and welding inspection.

  • Proficient in reading and interpreting isometric drawings, P&IDs, and welding symbols.

  • Knowledge of pressure testing procedures, mechanical test witnessing, and documentation protocols.

  • Hands-on experience using inspection and measurement tools as per QA/QC practices.

  • Conversant with Oil & Gas industry HSE requirements, safe work practices, and quality management systems (ISO 9001).


 Qualifications:



  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

  • CSWIP 3.1 / 3.2 certification (mandatory).

  • ASNT Level II in RT, UT, MT, and PT (preferred).

  • Minimum 5 years of post-CSWIP experience in piping and welding inspection within Oil & Gas or Petrochemical projects.
