About The Role

The Quality and Laboratory Governance Officer is responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of the laboratory quality assurance and governance framework for the SeaWorld Abu Dhabi (SWAD) diagnostic laboratory. The role provides independent quality assurance, compliance oversight, and governance support to ensure laboratory activities are conducted consistently, and in line with approved standards, regulatory expectations, and audit requirements. This includes ownership of the laboratory Quality Management System (QMS), document control, risk assessment frameworks, training and competency systems, equipment governance, and internal audit processes. The Quality and Laboratory Governance Officer works closely with the Senior Laboratory Manager to ensure systems are implemented effectively in daily practice, while remaining functionally independent of operational delivery. The role reports directly to the Senior Laboratory Manager with a direct escalation pathway to the Veterinary Pathologist. This position plays a critical role in reducing organizational risk, and providing leadership with objective assurance on laboratory quality and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Management and Laboratory Governance

  • Design, implement, and maintain an ISO-aligned Quality Management System appropriate for a veterinary and zoological diagnostic laboratory.
  • Manage laboratory document control systems, including SOP governance, version control, approval of workflows, and periodic review.
  • Maintain risk assessment frameworks (laboratory, process, equipment, and task-based).
  • Coordinate and support management review processes, quality metrics reporting, and governance documentation.

Audit, Assurance & Continuous Improvement

  • Plan and conduct internal audits of laboratory processes, safety, and compliance.
  • Track, document, and follow up on corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
  • Support readiness for external audits, inspections, or accreditation-related activities.
  • Identify systemic risks, trends, and recurring issues, and escalate appropriately.
  • Provide objective assurance and evidence-based reporting to leadership.

Training, Competency & Induction

  • Develop and maintain laboratory training, induction, and competency frameworks in collaboration with the Senior Laboratory Manager.
  • Ensure training records, competency assessments, and authorizations are current and auditable.
  • Support the development of role-specific SOP training and refresher programs.
  • Support audit readiness through consistent operational compliance with agreed systems and standards.

Equipment and Infrastructure Governance

  • Ensure traceability and documentation of equipment performance and compliance.
  • Work with laboratory and facilities teams to address infrastructure-related risks.

Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance

  • Support the implementation of laboratory-specific HSE policies, procedures, and risk controls.
  • Conduct laboratory safety inspections and walkthroughs in collaboration with operations.
  • Support incident reporting, investigation, and follow-up from a systems and governance perspective.

Collaboration, Escalation & Advisory Role

  • Act as a trusted advisor to the Senior Laboratory Manager and Veterinary Pathologist on quality, safety, and compliance matters.
  • Escalate significant risks, non-compliances, or systemic issues through agreed governance channels.
  • Maintain constructive working relationships across Animal Health, Research, and Operations teams.
  • Support a positive safety and quality culture through education, clarity, and consistency.
