Job Description

Job Description

The Desert Environment Research Center (DERC) at United Arab Emirates University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow to conduct advanced research on desert soil systems, land degradation processes, ecosystem resilience, and sustainable desert agriculture in arid environments. The successful candidate will investigate soil–vegetation interactions, soil–microbial dynamics, nutrient cycling, desertification processes, and ecological restoration strategies under changing climate conditions. The position emphasizes quantitative, experimental, and field-based research aimed at enhancing ecosystem stability, biodiversity, and climate-resilient land management in dryland systems. A key component of the role will be contributing to the development and operationalization of the DERC Desert Agriculture Lab, supporting research on soil health, bio-amendments, plant adaptation, and sustainable cultivation systems suitable for arid climates. The fellow will contribute to interdisciplinary research aligned with national priorities on climate adaptation, land restoration, biodiversity conservation, and food security in desert regions. The role includes producing high-impact publications, contributing to competitive research proposals, supporting applied environmental assessments, and mentoring graduate students. The fellow will collaborate with faculty members, research centers, governmental agencies, and international partners to produce high-impact publications, policy briefs, and applied sustainability frameworks aligned with national environmental and food–water–energy security priorities. Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement research on desert soil processes, soil degradation, and restoration ecology.
  • Investigate soil–microbe–plant interactions in arid environments.
  • Assess land degradation, salinization, nutrient depletion, and desertification dynamics.
  • Conduct field sampling, experimental trials, and ecological monitoring in desert landscapes.
  • Apply advanced analytical tools such as GIS, remote sensing, environmental modeling, and statistical analysis to assess ecosystem dynamics.
  • Develop ecosystem resilience indicators relevant to desert sustainability.
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and contribute to applied sustainability reports.
  • Support research proposal development and collaborative initiatives with national and international partners.

Minimum Qualification

  • Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Ecology, Arid Land Studies, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated research experience in desert or dryland ecosystems (MUST).
  • Proven track record of first authored peer-reviewed publications in relevant areas.
  • Experience in field-based environmental research and quantitative data analysis.

Preferred Qualification

  • Expertise in soil–microbial ecology, restoration ecology, or desert vegetation dynamics.
  • Experience working in arid or semi-arid regions.
  • Strong analytical skills in ecological modeling, biostatistics, GIS, or remote sensing applications for land assessment.
  • Experience contributing to interdisciplinary or policy-relevant research projects.

Expected Skills

  • Early-career researcher within 0–5 years of completing Ph.D.
  • Strong publication record relative to career stage (as first author).
  • Ability to independently design and manage research projects.
  • Experience in experimental design, field campaigns, and laboratory analysis of soil and ecological samples.
  • Excellent scientific writing and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams.
