Job Description

The role of a Phlebotomist is integral to the healthcare system, focusing on the collection of blood samples for diagnostic testing, transfusions, donations, or research. As a phlebotomist, you will be frequently interacting with patients, requiring a high level of skill in communication to ease any anxieties associated with blood collection procedures. You must also maintain a clean and sanitary environment to prevent contamination or infection. The job requires precision and efficiency to ensure that collected samples are properly labeled and sent to the laboratory for analysis. Responsibilities

  • Collect blood samples via venipuncture or capillary puncture for testing and transfusions.
  • Properly label all blood samples to ensure accurate laboratory analysis.
  • Explain procedures to patients to reduce anxiety and gain cooperation.
  • Prepare blood-collecting equipment while maintaining a sterile environment.
  • Verify patient information and order details with utmost accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Deliver or send collected specimens to the lab correctly and promptly.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the collection area at all times.
  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety guidelines during procedures.
  • Monitor patients for adverse reactions during and after blood collection.
  • Document and record all necessary data and interactions in the patient’s records.
  • Operate and handle blood sampling equipment according to standard procedures.
  • Attend regular training sessions to stay updated with phlebotomy techniques.

Requirements

  • Completion of a formal phlebotomy program from an accredited institution.
  • Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician from a recognized certifying body.
  • Proven experience in blood collection through venipuncture and capillary techniques.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology and patient care principles.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients and staff.
  • Ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team.
  • Attention to detail and precision in sample handling and documentation processes.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of health and safety regulations in a medical setting.
  • Proficiency in basic computer operations and data entry software.
