Job Description

An Optical Technician plays a critical role in the eye care industry, contributing to the creation and maintenance of eyewear essential for patients' needs. This role involves performing various technical tasks to support optometrists and ensure patients receive the best possible care. The Optical Technician is responsible for preparing and repairing eyeglasses and contact lenses, maintaining optical tools, and conducting essential diagnostic tests. This position requires strong attention to detail, technical skills, and excellent customer service ability to ensure accurate and helpful eyewear solutions for patrons. Working in coordination with opticians and ophthalmologists, the Optical Technician helps bridge the gap between eye exams and the distribution of corrective eyewear, ensuring a smooth experience for clients. Understanding patient prescriptions and advice, they play a pivotal part in translating optical results into precise, tailored eyewear that improves the quality of life for individuals with vision impairments.


Responsibilities

  • Assist in the creation and assembly of prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses.
  • Perform adjustments and repairs on eyewear based on customers’ requirements.
  • Manage and operate optical machinery and tools with high precision and care.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by addressing client questions and eyewear concerns.
  • Conduct quality control checks to ensure accuracy and compliance with prescriptions.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment in the optics lab and shop areas.
  • Keep an accurate inventory of optical supplies and report shortages promptly.
  • Collaborate effectively with optometrists, opticians, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Conduct basic diagnostic tests, such as lensometry, as part of patient care assessments.
  • Educate patients on proper usage and care for their prescribed eyewear.
  • Stay updated with trends and advancements in optical technology and products.
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and standards at all times.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education level is required for this position.
  • Previous experience as an optical technician or related field is preferred.
  • Strong hand-to-eye coordination and attention to optical details is necessary.
  • Excellent customer service skills, with the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Familiarity with optical tools, machinery, and diagnostic equipment is essential.
  • Basic computer knowledge for inventory and record-keeping tasks is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
