Job Description

An IP Medical Coder is a crucial member of the healthcare billing team, responsible for translating patient information, treatments, and procedures into alphanumeric codes that are used for billing and insurance purposes. These professionals work primarily with inpatient cases and are essential in ensuring the accuracy, efficiency, and compliance of medical coding within hospital settings. They play a vital role in the revenue cycle by validating coding accuracy to avoid claim denials. With a strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and coding guidelines, IP Medical Coders streamline the billing process, facilitating effective communication between healthcare providers and payers. They continuously liaise with medical staff to extract specific details for accurate and compliant code assignments.


Responsibilities

  • Review patient files to extract pertinent medical information for coding purposes.
  • Assign appropriate ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes to inpatient medical records.
  • Ensure coding accuracy in compliance with established guidelines and regulations.
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers to clarify ambiguous or incomplete documentation.
  • Conduct audits on coded data to ensure the precision of billing information.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and safeguard patient data in accordance with HIPAA requirements.
  • Update coding information systems with current data to reflect the most recent coding changes.
  • Identify and rectify discrepancies in patient information and billing documentation.
  • Provide feedback and education to medical staff around documentation improvements.
  • Assist in preparing and submitting claims to insurance companies for reimbursement processing.
  • Stay abreast of changes in coding regulations, standards, and healthcare legislation.
  • Generate regular reports on coding activity and issues to inform management decisions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or a related field.
  • Certification in Medical Coding, such as CPC, CCS, or relevant credential.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in inpatient hospital coding.
  • Proficiency in ICD-10, CPT, and healthcare coding systems and processes.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and pathophysiology.
  • Excellent attention to detail with solid analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision to meet deadlines.
