Moorfields Eye Hospital Center, Abu Dhabi, is a world leading expert in eye care. Established in partnership with UK’s Moorfields Eye Hospital, Moorfields Eye Hospital Abu Dhabi brings 200 years of specialist eye care experience to the United Arab Emirates. Founded in London in 1804, Moorfields is considered the oldest and one of the largest centers for ophthalmic treatment, teaching and research in the world.

The Consultant Ophthalmologist - Neuro-Ophthalmology will provide expert specialist care in the diagnosis, investigation, and management of disorders affecting the optic nerve, visual pathways, pupillary system, ocular motility, and visual manifestations of neurological disease. The postholder will play a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care for both routine and complex neuro-ophthalmic conditions, working closely with neurology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, endocrinology, and other multidisciplinary colleagues within M42 network. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and growth of neuro-ophthalmology services, while maintaining the highest standards of clinical quality, safety, and patient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and management of neuro-ophthalmic disorders in outpatient and hospital settings.
  • Diagnose and manage optic neuropathies, papilloedema, visual field defects, cranial nerve palsies, diplopia, ocular motility disorders, pupillary abnormalities, transient visual loss, and visual pathway disorders.
  • Assess and manage ophthalmic manifestations of neurological and systemic disease, including inflammatory, demyelinating, vascular, compressive, endocrine, and idiopathic conditions.
  • Interpret and correlate clinical findings with relevant investigations including visual fields, OCT, fundus imaging, neuro-imaging, blood tests, and electrophysiology as appropriate.
  • Work closely with neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, endocrinologists, physicians, and other specialties to provide coordinated multidisciplinary care.
  • Identify and manage urgent and sight- or life-threatening presentations requiring prompt investigation or escalation.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive clinical documentation.
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients and families, providing counselling, explanation, and reassurance regarding diagnosis, investigations, prognosis, and follow-up.
  • Support development of neuro-ophthalmology pathways to improve access, efficiency, continuity of care, and clinical outcomes.
  • Participate in urgent ophthalmology care and multidisciplinary case discussions as required by the service.
  • Supervise, teach, and support junior doctors, optometrists, orthoptists, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals where applicable.
  • Participate in audit, governance, morbidity review, research, and continuous professional development activities.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, professional standards, regulatory requirements, and patient safety protocols.

Qualifications

  • Medical degree from a recognised institution.
  • Completion of accredited specialist training in Ophthalmology.
  • Fellowship, CCT, CCST, American Board, FRCOphth, or equivalent recognised specialist qualification in Ophthalmology.
  • Fellowship training or equivalent advanced subspecialty training in Neuro-Ophthalmology.
  • Eligibility for DOH / HAAD consultant licensure in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
  • Significant post-certification experience as a specialist or consultant in neuro-ophthalmology.
  • Demonstrated expertise in diagnosing and managing neuro-ophthalmic disorders.
  • Experience working in a tertiary, specialist eye hospital, or high-volume ophthalmic service is highly desirable.
  • Strong clinical judgment and ability to manage both routine and complex neuro-ophthalmic cases safely and effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide compassionate and professional patient care.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to clinical governance, audit, teaching, and service development.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development, research, teaching, or publication activity is desirable.
