Job Description

A Construction Manager – Electrical (Substation Projects) is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising the construction and installation of electrical systems in substations such as AIS or GIS substations. The role ensures that all works meet utility standards, safety regulations, project schedule, and quality requirements.

Below Are The Main Responsibilities Specific To Substation Projects

  • Project Planning & Scheduling
  • Review substation electrical drawings, layouts, and specifications.
  • Develop detailed construction schedules for electrical activities.
  • Plan work sequences for:
    • Equipment installation
    • Cable laying
    • Control and protection systems
  • Coordinate with civil, mechanical, and commissioning teams to align schedules.
Manage installation and erection of major substation equipment such as:

  • Power transformers
  • Circuit breakers
  • Disconnectors / isolators
  • Current transformers (CT)
  • Voltage transformers (VT / PT)
  • Surge arresters
  • Busbars and connectors
  • GIS equipment (if applicable)

Ensure installation follows manufacturer instructions and project standards.

Supervise And Inspect

  • High-voltage (HV) and medium-voltage (MV) cable laying
  • Control and protection cable routing
  • Cable termination and jointing
  • Cable tray and trench installations
  • Earthing and grounding systems
  • Lighting and small power systems in the substation.

Coordinate Installation Of

  • Protection panels and relay systems
  • Control panels and RTU panels
  • SCADA systems
  • Communication systems and fiber optics
  • Interlocking and control wiring.

Ensure all wiring and panel installations meet design and testing requirements.

  • Oversee installation of substation grounding grid.
  • Ensure proper installation of:
    • Earth pits
    • Ground conductors
    • Equipment bonding
    • Lightning protection systems.
  • Verify earth resistance measurements meet design criteria.
    • Method statements
    • Inspection test plans (ITP)
    • Material submittals
  • Conduct site inspections and coordinate with consultants for approvals.
Support Testing And Commissioning Of Substation Systems Including

  • Transformer testing
  • Circuit breaker functional tests
  • Relay protection testing
  • Cable insulation and continuity tests
  • SCADA communication tests

Coordinate with commissioning engineers and utility representatives.

  • Plan delivery and storage of major equipment such as transformers and GIS components.
  • Ensure correct handling and preservation of sensitive equipment.
  • Monitor material inventory and prevent delays.
