Job Description

A Cath Lab Technician is a vital part of the cardiology team, and is responsible for assisting in diagnostic and interventional procedures within the cardiac catheterization laboratory. This technical specialist works closely with cardiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide high-quality patient care. The main role includes the preparation and maintenance of various technical and electronic equipment used during catheterization procedures. Furthermore, the Cath Lab Technician plays a critical role in patient preparation, operation of fluoroscopy machines, and monitoring of patient vitals. This career demands attention to detail, technical proficiency, and a commitment to following hospital protocols and safety standards, ensuring efficient and safe patient experiences.


Responsibilities

  • Assist physicians during diagnostic and interventional catheterization procedures.
  • Prepare and maintain the cleanliness of cath lab equipment and instruments.
  • Monitor and document patient vitals and status throughout procedures.
  • Set up and operate diagnostic imaging equipment such as fluoroscopy machines.
  • Ensure radiation safety for patients, staff, and oneself in the cath lab.
  • Administer medications under a physician's direction during procedures.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and equipment logs for procedural reports.
  • Ensure compliance with established infection control and safety protocols.
  • Participate in emergency procedures and be prepared for rapid response situations.
  • Educate and support patients and families regarding procedures and post-care.
  • Provide technical assistance and guide newly hired cath lab staff.
  • Coordinate with the cardiology team to schedule and prioritize procedures.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Cardiovascular Technology or Radiologic Technology program.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
  • At least two years of experience in cath lab technology or related fields.
  • Proficiency in operating diagnostic imaging equipment and monitoring systems.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively work within a team.
  • Ability to respond promptly to emergencies and handle stressful situations calmly.
  • Willingness to participate in continuing education and training programs.
