The Production Chemist will be responsible for supporting best‑in‑class waterflood and water injection performance through technical expertise in water chemistry, compatibility, and water quality governance. The role will contribute to the definition and application of water specifications, monitoring frameworks, and best practices to minimize risks associated with water injection, including injectivity impairment, scaling, souring, and long‑term reservoir damage. The Production Chemist will work closely with the Water Management team, Technical Centre, and asset teams to provide technical assurance, support optimization initiatives, and enable consistent water quality standards across assets.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct water and fluid compatibility assessments to support safe and reliable injection, reuse, and integration of multiple water sources
Develop and maintain water quality specifications and acceptance criteria for injection and reuse water, and support governance of compliance
Monitor, analyze, and interpret water quality data, contributing to the development and application of water quality indices and surveillance tools
Assess the impact of water quality on injectivity, scaling, souring, and corrosion risks, and support the definition of mitigation and chemical treatment strategies
Provide technical input to waterflood health checks, water injection diagnostics, and surveillance activities in collaboration with subsurface and surface teams
Interface with Technical Centre, Operations, and Development teams to support water‑related studies, projects, and optimization initiatives
Provide expert technical support on water chemistry issues related to produced water handling, PWRI, seawater injection, aquifer water, and reuse schemes
Develop and maintain water chemistry datasets, models, and reference databases to support water management decision‑making
Prepare technical notes, reports, and presentations to support assurance reviews, governance forums, and asset engagements
Participate in the assessment of contractor and laboratory capabilities through audits and reviews to ensure technical adequacy and consistency with ADNOC standards
Support the scoping, execution, and review of laboratory studies related to fluid‑fluid and fluid‑rock compatibility
Contribute to the development of best practices, guidelines, and standard methodologies for water compatibility testing and water quality monitoring
Provide technical input to recommendations on filtration, treatment technologies, and chemical programs, with attention to lifecycle cost and operational robustness
Contribute to technology screening, innovation, and continuous improvement initiatives by tracking emerging water chemistry solutions and industry best practices
Contribute to the design and deployment of digital water chemistry solutions, including the development of centralized databases and dashboards for water quality and water chemistry tracking, enabling consistent surveillance, trend analysis, and decision‑making across assets.
Support waterflood diagnostics using water chemistry as a tracer tool, including the interpretation of ionic composition, chemical fingerprints, and stable isotopes (e.g. δ²H / δ¹⁸O) to assess reservoir connectivity, injection water breakthrough, source attribution, and sweep efficiency.
Qualifications and experiences:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline
Minimum of 15 years of experience in water chemistry, water compatibility, and water injection support within the oil and gas industry
Strong understanding of waterflood and water injection challenges in carbonate reservoirs
Proven experience in defining and applying water specifications and monitoring frameworks
Experience with water quality surveillance, interpretation, and troubleshooting
Experience supporting chemical treatment programs for scaling, souring, and injectivity management
Strong analytical, diagnostic, and problem‑solving skills
Effective communication and stakeholder engagement capabilities
Ability to work independently while contributing to multidisciplinary teams
Proficiency with relevant tools and software (e.g. PHREEQC, Geochemist’s Workbench, Excel)
