Job Description

The CPA Western School of Business (CPAWSB) is seeking an experienced, detail‑oriented, and collaborative Associate Director, CPA Professional Examinations to support the delivery of a national, high‑stakes examination portfolio within the CPA Professional Program. This role offers an opportunity to play a central operational leadership role in the development, delivery, marking, and reporting of Canada’s CPA examinations, while contributing to the continuous improvement of exam processes, systems, and quality standards.

Reporting to the Director, CPA Professional Examinations, the Associate Director provides operational leadership and subject‑matter expertise across key phases of the exam lifecycle, including exam authoring and content development, marking operations, psychometric review, standard‑setting support, and results reporting. Working as part of the Exam Provider Unit, the Associate Director supports the delivery of examinations that are valid, reliable, secure, fair, and defensible, and that align with Competency Map 2.0, regulatory expectations, and profession‑wide policies.

The Associate Director works closely with the Director, Senior Managers, psychometricians, exam authors, markers, vendors, committees, the Board of Examiners (BOE), and provincial, territorial, and Bermudian (PTB) regulatory bodies to ensure operational readiness, consistency, and quality across exam cycles. The role contributes to the implementation of standardized processes, documentation, and quality assurance practices that support a resilient and scalable national examination program.

Working collaboratively within the Exam Provider Unit, this role supports the Certification Collaboration Committee (CCC), assists the BOE and Director in exam content development and standard‑setting activities, and engages with internal and external partners to resolve issues and support continuous improvement. Assigned portfolios may include a variety of item types, including multiple‑choice questions, cases and other evolving innovative assessment formats. The Associate Director is expected to have deep expertise in these item types while also maintaining sufficient breadth of technical accounting knowledge to develop and assess content across the CPA examination continuum.

What The Successful Candidates Will Bring

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, assessment, psychometrics, measurement, or a related field required. Master’s degree in a related field is considered an asset.
  • CPA designation or certification in assessment/credentialing, an asset.
  • Bilingualism in English and French is considered an asset.

Experience

  • 5 to 7+ years of progressive experience in exam development, professional certification, psychometrics, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting high-stakes examination programs, including exam development, delivery, or marking operations.
  • Working knowledge of exam content development methodologies, marking processes, and standard‑setting approaches (e.g., Angoff, Bookmark, Hofstee).
  • Experience coordinating complex projects involving multiple partners, committees, or vendor relationships.
  • Exposure to multiple‑choice question development principles and case‑based assessment design and marking frameworks.

Skills And Attributes

  • Strong understanding of assessment principles, exam development methodologies, and quality assurance practices.
  • Ability to manage operational details and competing priorities across multiple exam activities and deadlines.
  • Comfort working with data, psychometric concepts, and evidence supporting exam defensibility.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem‑solving capabilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fairness, accessibility, equity, and candidate‑centred assessment practices.
  • Comfort working with modern digital tools, including Microsoft 365 and Artificial Intelligence‑enabled productivity tools such as Microsoft Copilot.

This role is eligible for hybrid work. The CPAWSB is based primarily in Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver. If based outside of these centers, the successful candidate may be required to travel to a CPAWSB office from time to time, or as required.

The salary range for this role is $110,600 to $165,900. We recognize the value of directly comparable experience. Candidates bringing recent experience performing equivalent work may be eligible for salary and benefit placement that reflects that experience, in accordance with organizational compensation policies.
