The Opportunity
The Bridge Claims Specialist is responsible for supporting a seamless transition for claimants whose disability may progress from Short Term Disability (STD) to Long Term Disability (LTD). Guided by our purpose – a lways with you building a more confident future – and our New Frontier strategy focused on stronger growth, attractive returns and all-weather performance, this is an exciting opportunity to partner closely with claimants and internal/external resources to assess ongoing disability, document the file appropriately, set expectations, and ensure bridging actions are completed timely and accurately. In this role, the Bridge Specialist is required to exercise independent judgment, critical thinking skills, exemplary customer service skills as well as effective inventory management skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead end‑to‑end disability claim evaluations by applying contractual provisions accurately, encouraging return to work where appropriate, and driving timely, well‑reasoned claim decisions in a fast‑paced environment with minimal oversight.
- Create comprehensive action plans and clear written communications that document claim status, evaluations, and determinations, ensuring accuracy, regulatory compliance, and transparency throughout the life of each claim.
- Oversee thorough and balanced claims reviews, including pending, active, and bridge‑related claims, ensuring documentation, analysis, and decisions align with plan provisions and applicable regulations.
- Manage an assigned caseload independently while delivering a high level of service through proactive claimant communication, follow‑through on commitments, timely responses, and clear explanations of benefits and processes.
- Develop return‑to‑work potential by assessing medical and non‑medical barriers, functional capacity, and prognosis, leveraging claimant interviews and medical evidence to support appropriate recovery and transition strategies.
- Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders—including physicians, attorneys, vocational and clinical consultants, and business partners—to gather, clarify, and reconcile information, proactively update key partners, and ensure well‑supported claim outcomes.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma (or GED equivalent).
- 1–2 years of customer service experience.
- Prior experience with independent judgement and decision making while relying on the available facts.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to interview claimants dynamically with the goal of setting claimant expectations and obtaining information necessary to administer the claim.
- Basic knowledge of medical conditions, treatments, prognosis.
- Critical-thinking skills.
- Strategic-thinking skills and the ability to apply judgment and decision-making based on strategy.
- Organizational and time management skills; ability to balance quantity and quality.
Preferred Qualifications
- Call center experience in an insurance setting.
- Prior experience with STD and LTD.
- Ability to give and receive feedback to/from partners.
- College or University degree.
The expected salary range for this position is $41,600 - $56,200. This role may also be eligible for annual short-term incentive compensation. All incentives and benefits are subject to the applicable plan terms.
