Job Description
Role Overview
The Field Medical Writer will lead the development, writing, and updates of a standardized hyperkalemia treatment protocol in collaboration with key external experts (KEEs) and hospital stakeholders. The role is field‑focused, engaging directly with clinical teams across multiple institutions to harmonize practices, incorporate evidence-based recommendations, and drive adoption. The position requires strong scientific acumen, medical writing expertise, and the ability to build advocacy and manage stakeholder follow‑up.
Key Responsibilities
Writing and updating a comprehensive hyperkalemia treatment protocol across an estimated 8–10 hospitals, ensuring clinical accuracy, consistency, and alignment to current guidelines and local practice constraints.
Working with KEEs across 18 hospitals to gather insights, reconcile variations in practice, and integrate consensus recommendations into the protocol.
Reviewing and synthesizing recent literature, clinical guidelines, and local data to inform protocol content, algorithms, and decision pathways.
Facilitating cross‑functional and cross‑institutional input (nephrology, cardiology, emergency medicine, pharmacy) and coordinate review cycles with KEEs and hospital administrators.
Building advocacy for the protocol by developing clear clinical rationales, educational materials, and communication plans tailored to hospital teams and leadership.
Establishing document control, track changes, and maintain an audit trail of inputs, decisions, and approvals.
Providing field support for onboarding and rollout, including training aids, quick-reference tools, and feedback mechanisms to monitor adoption barriers and needed refinements.
Planning timelines, milestones, and stakeholder touchpoints to deliver within the 10‑month term, escalating risks and driving resolution to keep hospitals on schedule.
Ensuring all materials adhere to medical, regulatory, and ethical standards, with clear sourcing, disclaimers, and conflict-of-interest management.
Essential Qualifications
Bachelor’s or higher in a scientific discipline (e.g., pharmacy, nursing, biomedical sciences, medicine, public health). Advanced degree preferred.
Demonstrated capability to author clinical protocols, care pathways, SOPs, or guideline summaries with high editorial and scientific rigor.
Strong understanding of acute care workflows; familiarity with hyperkalemia pathophysiology, risk stratification, treatment options (stabilization, shift, elimination), and monitoring is a plus.
Proven ability to follow up and collaborate with KEEs and hospital administrators, facilitating consensus and approvals across multiple sites.
Excellent written and verbal communication, able to translate complex evidence into clear, actionable guidance and educational materials.
Ability to critically appraise literature and integrate evidence with pragmatic clinical considerations.
Knowledge of medical, regulatory, and ethical standards relevant to protocol development and dissemination.
Desired Experience
Prior field medical writing or MSL/medical affairs experience working with hospitals and KEEs.
Experience implementing standardized clinical protocols across multiple institutions.
Familiarity with quality improvement methodologies and metrics tracking for protocol adoption.
Term and Location
Contract Term: 10 months
Travel/Field Work: Regular on-site engagement across participating hospitals, with flexibility for virtual collaboration as needed.
