Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the manual polishing, lapping, and finishing of ZnSe optical components to required surface quality, dimensional, and cosmetic specifications.
  • Perform visual inspections and measurements using applicable metrology equipment to ensure product conformity.
  • Follow work instructions, process specifications, and safety procedures during all production activities.
  • Maintain accurate production records, inspection data, and process documentation.
  • Identify and report product non-conformities, equipment issues, and process deviations to supervisors.
  • Support troubleshooting and corrective actions to resolve production and quality concerns.
  • Maintain cleanliness and proper handling of optical materials, tools, and equipment to prevent damage or contamination.
  • Lead and manage assigned polishing activities to meet daily production targets, quality requirements, and delivery schedules.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance productivity, yield, and process efficiency.
  • Collaborate effectively with Production, Quality, Engineering, and Maintenance teams to support operational objectives.

Education & Experience

  • A vocational diploma, technical certification, or equivalent qualification in Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Technology, Precision Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • High school graduates with relevant manufacturing experience may also be considered.
  • At least 1–3 years of relevant work experience in optical polishing, precision manufacturing, semiconductor manufacturing, or related production environments.
  • Experience in handling optical materials, precision measurement tools, and quality inspection processes is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with cleanroom practices and manufacturing quality standards is preferred.

Skills

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to perform precision manual work.
  • Basic leadership capabilities to guide team members during daily production activities when assigned.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and enjoy the process of problem-solving.
  • Ability to read and follow technical drawings, work instructions, and process specifications.
  • Good analytical and troubleshooting skills for identifying process and quality issues.
  • Work effectively with other members of Coherent Corp. to achieve production, quality, and customer satisfaction goals.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet production deadlines in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Basic computer skills for documentation and production reporting.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

Working Conditions

  • This role is 100% onsite in a manufacturing production environment.
  • Requires prolonged standing, repetitive hand movements, and handling of delicate optical components.
  • May require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to cleanroom protocols where applicable.
  • May require overtime, shift work, or flexible working hours to support business demands and production schedules.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the handwork process for ZnSe lens polishing, ensuring efficient and precise operations.
  • Oversee the entire polishing process, from initial setup to final inspection, to maintain quality standards.
  • Train and guide team members on proper polishing techniques and best practices.
  • Collaborate with other departments, such as engineering and quality control, to optimize the polishing process and implement improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Monitor and maintain polishing equipment, performing routine maintenance and identifying any potential issues.
  • Keep accurate records of polishing activities, including production data and quality control metrics.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors, providing regular updates on progress and any challenges encountered.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and advancements in lens polishing techniques to enhance our processes.
  • Support the department's goals and objectives, contributing to a positive and productive work environment.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as optics, materials science, or engineering, is preferred.
  • At least 2 years of experience in lens polishing or a related field, with a strong understanding of optical fabrication processes.
  • Leadership capabilities to manage and motivate a team, ensuring efficient and effective operations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high-quality standards in lens polishing.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritizing effectively.
  • Proficiency in using polishing equipment and tools, with a willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey information clearly to team members and supervisors.
  • A positive attitude and a passion for continuous improvement in lens polishing techniques and processes.
