NOVA Workforce Adjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in the designated discipline/field of study to students from a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences. Teaching may include a variety of formats: face-to-face, remote and online. The teaching load is based on student enrollment and staffing needs. The adjunct faculty contract contains no expectation or guarantees of continued employment.

Must reside in the (DC, VA, MD) DMV area.

Duties And Tasks

  • Provide hands-on, guided, differentiated instructions to students enrolled in the courses, as specified in the schedule and course contract.
  • Prepare course materials and lesson plans.
  • Conduct efficient and effective classroom management.
  • Provide students with an approved syllabus that includes course objectives and learning outcomes, teaching methodology, attendance policies in line with those of the institution, assignments and deliverables, timelines, and evaluation criteria.
  • Use the institution’s learning management system to post syllabus, assignments, and other materials and to communicate with students, in a timely manner.
  • Deliver course content using a variety of teaching styles and provide interesting and engaging assignments that demonstrate the real-world applications of concepts covered.
  • Maintain records of enrollment and attendance, assessments and grades, and submit class rosters and grade sheets by the deadlines established by the department.
  • Maintains a hazard free environment and practices safety in lab(s) or classroom.
  • Adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with college and departmental policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Keep up to date with industry advancements and technologies.

Student Support And Assessment

Technical Expertise

  • Possess a strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and facility maintenance systems, including preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance practices.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using diagnostic tools and equipment.

Other Duties

  • Maintain equipment and supplies in the lab.
  • Assist with student scheduling and advising.
  • Participate in college events and activities.

Essential Functions

As a part of the primary responsibility to provide quality instruction, the College expects each faculty member to meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports routinely; teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts; and adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSAs/Required Qualifications

  • Welding Processes & TechniquesIn-depth knowledge of SMAW (stick), GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), and FCAW processes across multiple materials (carbon steel, stainless, aluminum).
  • Blueprint Reading & Fabrication Understanding of welding symbols, blueprints, measurements, and fabrication layout.
  • Metallurgy Fundamentals Knowledge of heat-affected zones, distortion control, and material properties.
  • Welding Codes & Standards Familiarity with American Welding Society (AWS) standards (e.g., D1.1 Structural Welding Code) and applicable industry specifications.
  • Safety & Shop Practices Knowledge of OSHA safety standards, PPE requirements, ventilation, fire prevention, and safe equipment operation.
  • Instructional Methods Understanding of adult learning principles, competency-based training, and structured curriculum delivery (e.g., NCCER frameworks).
  • Hands-On Welding Instruction Demonstrate and teach welding techniques in a lab/shop environment with real-time coaching.
  • Weld Quality Assessment Evaluate welds visually and, where applicable, through basic inspection methods; provide corrective feedback.
  • Curriculum Delivery Deliver lesson plans, lab exercises, and assessments aligned with industry standards and workforce outcomes.
  • Student Engagement & Communication Explain technical concepts clearly to diverse learners and maintain an inclusive learning environment.
  • Lab & Equipment Management Maintain welding equipment, ensure proper setup, and enforce safe work practices.
  • Translate Industry Practice to Training Connect real-world welding applications to instructional content.
  • Adaptability Adjust teaching strategies based on student skill levels and learning needs.
  • Safety Leadership Consistently enforce safety protocols and model proper shop behavior.
  • Problem-Solving Diagnose welding defects and guide students through corrective techniques.
  • Workforce Alignment Align training with employer expectations and industry certifications.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA safety standards and welding shop safety procedures

Minimum Work Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Welding experience in a commercial, industrial, or construction environment
  • Demonstrated experience performing multiple welding processes (SMAW, MIG, TIG, FCAW)
  • Current welding certification(s) aligned with American Welding Society (AWS) standards (e.g., AWS D1.1 or equivalent)
  • Ability to obtain additional or updated certifications as required

  • Practical working experience in the subject field/industry and related
  • Experience teaching “boot camp” style training course
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive working and learning environment.
