Job Description

We’re looking for a Legal Case Specialist to join our GRC team at MBPS. In this role, you are responsible for managing and coordinating a broad range of complex yet structured legal cases such as but not limited to the handling of legal and contractual issues related to individual contracts or policies, pension plans, and structured settlements that require legal knowledge and judgment. The role supports legal operations by ensuring cases are handled accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with internal procedures and applicable regulations.

Position Responsibilities

  • Review, assess, and handle legal documents (e.g., powers of attorney, guardianships, trusts, court orders, subpoenas) related to annuity and fixed products.
  • Determine document acceptability; draft customer and attorney communications identifying defects and remediation steps when documents cannot be accepted.
  • Research and apply U.S. state and Canadian provincial laws governing POAs, guardianships, conservatorships, and related legal matters.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for business staff on legal and contractual issues; escalate complex matters to legal counsel and management as needed.
  • Prepare case files, summaries, and memoranda for legal counsel; support subpoena and legal process responses through customer data research and product restriction.
  • Supervise, train, and support business staff through job aids, training materials, and ongoing guidance on legal and contractual topics.
  • Improve internal workflows and identify operational trends, risks, and complaints to enhance legal document handling and controls.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a legal, compliance, financial services, or related environment.
  • Familiarity with the U.S. legal system, including legal terminology related to estates, trusts, powers of attorney, and court‑issued documents.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and documentation accuracy.
  • Ability to assess issues and resolve exceptions using judgment and prior experience.
  • Strong understanding of long-term care, life insurance, and annuity products; experience with John Hancock products preferred.
