We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Criminal Defense Lawyer with 5+ years of post-qualification experience specializing in criminal law within the Australian legal system. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience representing clients across a broad range of criminal matters, from summary offences to serious indictable offences, and possess a strong understanding of Australian criminal legislation, court procedures, and advocacy.

This role involves providing strategic legal advice, managing complex criminal cases, drafting legal submissions, and working closely with Australian law firms in a fully remote environment. Candidates with previous experience working with Australian clients or firms will be highly regarded.

Responsibilities

- Manage a diverse caseload involving criminal defense matters from initial instruction through resolution.

- Provide strategic legal advice to clients on criminal charges, investigations, bail applications, pleas, sentencing, and appeals.

- Draft and review legal documents, including court submissions, affidavits, briefs, correspondence, and legal opinions.

- Conduct detailed legal research on Australian criminal legislation, case law, and procedural rules.

- Develop effective defense strategies tailored to each clients circumstances.

- Liaise with clients, counsel, law enforcement agencies, expert witnesses, and other legal professionals.

- Prepare matters for hearings, trials, mediations, and negotiations.

- Mentor junior lawyers and contribute to the continuous improvement of legal processes.

- Stay informed of legislative changes and emerging developments in Australian criminal law.

Qualifications

- Bachelors Degree in Law (LLB or equivalent) and admission to practice law in a recognized jurisdiction.

- Minimum of 5 years of post-qualification experience practicing criminal law.

- Demonstrated experience handling criminal defense matters within the Australian legal system.

- Strong understanding of Australian criminal legislation, court procedures, evidence, and criminal practice.

- Excellent advocacy, legal drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills.

- Ability to manage complex matters independently while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.

- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

- Experience working remotely and supporting Australian law firms is highly desirable.

- Experience supervising or mentoring junior legal professionals is an advantage.
