Job Description

I am seeking motivated MSc and PhD students to join my newly established research group in the department of Earth and atmospheric science at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). Start dates are flexible (Summer 2026 through Fall 2027).

Our Lab Investigates How The Warming Atmosphere Reshapes The Terrestrial Water Cycle And How Those Changes Impact Global Food Production And Water Availability. We Use a Hierarchy Of Empirical And Process-based Models To Better Understand The Impacts Of Climate Change On People And Nature, Including

  • Terrestrial responses to hydrologic intensification: Diagnosing water cycle amplification under warming and how intensified precipitation regimes affect land wetness and dryness.
  • Vegetation-Atmosphere Feedbacks: Investigating how plants modulate terrestrial hydrology, land-atmosphere coupling, and droughts, especially as their physiology adjusts to higher CO2.
  • Climate Risks to Global Agriculture: Identifying the biophysical mechanisms of climate impacts on crop production to better quantify future risks and inform effective adaptations.

While I provide the core lab themes and computational infrastructure, I am highly open to students bringing their own research questions or creative angles within these broad domains.

Qualifications & Language

  • A demonstrated curiosity about how the Earth system works.
  • A degree in Earth, Atmospheric, or Environmental Sciences; Physics; Hydrology; or a related quantitative field. An MSc is required for admission to our PhD program.
  • French language proficiency is required for the MSc program, but not for the PhD program.
  • Proficiency in (or a strong desire to learn) scientific programming (Python, R). Experience with climate data and/or statistical, climate, or process-based modeling is a significant asset.

How to apply

For an informal discussion about the position and potential projects, please send 1) a brief CV and 2) a short statement of research interests to: lesk.corey@uqam.ca. Please being subject heading with [EGU MSc/PhD].
