Job Description

The Patch Management Engineer is responsible for maintaining the security, stability and

compliance of customer server and workstation environments through the effective

management of operating system and application patching. The role oversees all stages of the

patch lifecycle including evaluation, scheduling, deployment and validation, ensuring systems

remain secure and aligned with industry and vendor best practices.

The Patch Management Engineer works closely with internal teams, vendors and clients to

deliver consistent patch governance, reduce vulnerability exposure and support overall service

quality.

Key Challenges

As a hands-on role, the Patch Management Engineer applies deep technical knowledge of update

management platforms, Windows servicing models and vulnerability remediation. Their

contribution is critical in ensuring safe patch deployment across diverse customer

environments while balancing business impact, change windows and compliance requirements.

They will navigate complex environments, manage competing priorities, and ensure high

accuracy and reliability in all patching outcomes.

Responsibilities & Accountabilities

Software Patch Lifecycle Delivery

  • Evaluate vendor patches for applicability, criticality and potential business impact.
  • Approval and installation of updates in line with Australian security frameworks.
  • Manage monthly Microsoft Patch Tuesday cycles, cumulative updates, security updates and
  • out-of-band releases.
  • Managing patch environments and schedules across multiple customer environments.
  • Prepare patch schedules, test plans and deployment approvals in line with customer
  • maintenance windows.
  • Oversee patch deployment, monitoring and post-deployment validation to ensure successful
  • completion.
  • Track, report and improve patch compliance across server and workstation environments.
  • Platform & Toolset Management
  • Hardware Patch Lifecycle
  • Firewall and Switch patching across Fortinet and Aruba vendor products
  • Firmware patching for on-premise servers, SANs, UPS
  • Administer patching processes within:
  • N-Central (RMM policies, automation tasks, custom services)
  • Microsoft Intune (Windows Update for Business, Autopatch, Update Rings)
  • Microsoft Azure (Azure Update Manager)
  • Patch My PC for third-party application patching
  • Ensure patch packages, deployment rules and device groups remain current and optimised.
  • Maintain accurate documentation providing clear reference for global patch governance.
  • Vulnerability Remediation
  • Collaborate with the Cyber Security and Technology teams to review Tenable vulnerability reports.
  • Map CVEs to available vendor patches and build effective remediation plans.
  • Validate remediation success through re-scans and address any residual risks.
  • Operational Excellence
  • Produce patch performance and compliance reporting for internal and customer stakeholders.
  • Troubleshoot patch failures and coordinate escalation where required.
  • Support continual process improvement and automation across patching workflows.
  • Contribute to service reviews, audits and change management processes.
  • Work closely with the ITS Service Desk to enable patch ticketing and remediation processes to be implemented and adhered to within defined service levels.

Skills And Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience in a similar role, preferably in a managed services environment
  • Proven track record of delivering patch management in a complex environment
  • Strong technical knowledge and skills in various IT domains, such as networking, cloud, security infrastructure, software, etc.
  • Knowledge of backup and recovery technologies and configuration
  • Knowledge and application of relevant Australian Privacy Standards
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively and manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Certification in Microsoft Azure
  • Certifications in Microsoft Modern Workplace
  • Certifications in specific related products discipline highly desirable
