Job Description

About The Company

EROAD is a true Kiwi tech success story, listed on both the NZX and ASX, providing telematics-based fleet management technology to transport and logistics operators across New Zealand, Australia and North America. As the team grows, EROAD is hiring a Senior Software Engineer (Java, AI-Native) to strengthen its backend engineering capability out of the Manila office.

What You'll Do

You'll take ownership of complex backend systems and help raise the bar for how the team builds with AI.

  • Design, build and operate complex backend services handling microservices, event-driven workflows and RESTful APIs.
  • Direct AI coding agents on complex, multi-step tasks, then rigorously review, correct and verify their output before anything ships.
  • Catch AI failure modes before they reach production, from hallucinated dependencies to insecure patterns and shallow tests.
  • Own production health, driving monitoring, alerting and observability so issues are caught early.
  • Lift the quality bar across the team through code review, feedback and knowledge sharing, including in AI-native practices.
  • Take part in on-call rotation, sharing responsibility for production issues as they arise.
  • Report to the Chapter Lead and work within a trunk-based, CI/CD-driven delivery model.

What You Need

We're after someone with a strong backend track record and genuine depth in AI-native development.

  • Strong Java experience building and running complex production backend systems, ideally with AWS cloud-native architecture, though equivalent experience on other cloud-native stacks is also welcome.
  • Solid grounding in microservices, event-driven architecture and RESTful APIs.
  • Fluency in at least one of MongoDB, PostgreSQL or SQL Server, with the ability to reason across different data models.
  • Experience building test automation across unit, component, integration and end-to-end levels.
  • Comfortable working with CI/CD, trunk-based development, Docker and deployment pipelines.
  • Hands-on production experience with monitoring, alerting and observability.
  • Genuine, serious use of AI coding tools, directing agents on complex work and rigorously verifying what they produce before it ships.
  • A track record of mentoring others and lifting team quality through code review and knowledge sharing.
  • Comfortable working 4 days a week on-site in Manila (Monday to Thursday) with a WFH Friday, and participating in on-call rotation.

WHY JOIN

This is a chance to shape how a growing engineering team builds software with AI at its core.

  • Work on complex backend systems at real production scale, with genuine ownership of design and delivery decisions.
  • Be part of defining AI-native engineering practice for the team, not just adopting someone else's playbook.
  • Join a high-growth, publicly listed technology company making a real, tangible difference for its customers.
  • Work alongside a talented, collaborative and multicultural engineering team.
  • Continuous learning support, including EAP offerings and AI tooling, to help you keep growing.
  • Enjoy a WFH Friday every week as part of your regular working pattern.
