The Senior Cloud FinOps Engineer is responsible for optimizing cloud expenditures, managing enterprise-wide Azure costs, and establishing robust financial governance frameworks that align cloud investments with organizational objectives. This position requires a blend of advanced Azure expertise and financial insight to identify cost-saving opportunities, implement effective chargeback models, and foster a culture of cloud cost accountability.
The role involves close collaboration with infrastructure, application, and business teams to deliver measurable cost optimizations while ensuring performance, security, and reliability are maintained.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and maintain comprehensive Azure cost management and optimization strategies in alignment with business goals
Analyze Azure consumption patterns to identify cost drivers and recommend architectural or operational improvements for cost reduction
Implement Azure Cost Management + Billing tools, FinOps Toolkit, alerts, budgets, and custom dashboards to enhance visibility and accountability across subscriptions and cost centers
Design and manage chargeback models to ensure fair and transparent allocation of cloud costs to business units, projects, or departments
Conduct regular cost optimization reviews and audits, including identifying reserved instance and savings plan opportunities, right-sizing resources, and eliminating waste
Establish and enforce tagging strategies for effective cost allocation, governance, and reporting
Monitor Azure spending forecasts, providing trend analysis and detailed reporting to leadership and stakeholders
Collaborate with infrastructure teams to optimize resource utilization, including virtual machine sizing, storage, networking, and data transfer costs
Evaluate and recommend Azure services and pricing models to maximize cost efficiency
Define and track KPIs and metrics related to cost efficiency, waste reduction, and return on investment for cloud initiatives
Investigate billing discrepancies and coordinate with Azure support and finance teams to resolve issues
Stay informed on Azure pricing updates, new service offerings, and emerging cost optimization features
Build and maintain cost forecasting models and budgets to support capacity and financial planning
Develop and deliver training sessions on FinOps practices and cloud cost management best practices for engineering and business teams
Prepare and present monthly and annual cost consumption and forecast analysis reports
Skills and Experience
Extensive experience with Azure Cost Management + Billing, FinOps Toolkit, Azure Advisor, and related cost analysis tools
In-depth knowledge of Azure pricing models, licensing options, and cost drivers across compute, storage, networking, and databases
Proven track record in implementing and managing reserved instances, savings plans, and commitment discounts
Strong background in cloud financial governance, budgeting, chargeback models, and cost allocation frameworks
Advanced analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex billing data, identify trends, and communicate findings to both technical and financial stakeholders
Proficiency in data analysis and visualization using Excel and Power BI
Experience managing cloud adoption and cost optimization at scale across multiple teams and subscriptions
Understanding of containerization costs, Azure Data Lake, and database optimization strategies
Familiarity with Azure DevOps, infrastructure-as-code, and automation tools to support cost optimization initiatives
Knowledge of tagging strategies, governance policies, and Azure Policy for cost control and compliance
Experience with multi-cloud or hybrid cloud cost management models
Exposure to advanced forecasting, machine learning, or predictive analytics for cost modeling
Experience with third-party cost optimization platforms
Awareness of Azure sustainability features and carbon tracking tools
Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey financial and technical concepts to diverse audiences
Qualifications
Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, information technology, or a related field
Relevant certifications such as Azure Fundamentals, Azure Administrator Associate, or Azure Data Engineer
Location: Remote or hybrid work arrangement
Full-time, contractual position (40 hours per week)
