About the Role

We are looking for a motivated, experienced, and hands-on Backend Engineer to join our team as part of our new Manila-based offshore team. Reporting into the Team Lead (Manila) and working closely with engineering leadership in Malta, you will contribute to the delivery of scalable, high-performance data and marketing solutions.


In this role, you will work on scalable backend systems and services that power a cutting-edge AI/ML, Data, and Marketing platform, including our Marketing Hub product. You will operate within a modern, cloud-based ecosystem, building and maintaining both synchronous and asynchronous services, and leveraging distributed systems and real-time data processing technologies.


Our Marketing Core product is a market-leading, real-time, cloud-based marketing platform which powers our Sports and Casino sites across all regions, supporting Marketing operations — offers, campaigns, promotions, rewards, and more. The current tech stack includes Java 11/17, Spring, Kafka, MongoDB, GraphQL, Debezium, Python, AWS, Terraform, React, and Node.


What youll Do

  • Design and build scalable, secure, and high-performance backend systems, including microservices and distributed architectures.
  • Design and build robust RESTful or GraphQL APIs and backend services with a focus on reliability and maintainability.
  • Design and work with databases (SQL/NoSQL), ensure data integrity, and implement efficient data access and storage patterns.
  • Identify bottlenecks and contribute to solutions for caching, load balancing, and horizontal/vertical scaling.
  • Deliver clean, testable code and uphold engineering standards through code reviews and best practices.
  • Implement automated testing strategies and support continuous integration and deployment pipelines.
  • Work with cloud infrastructure, observability tools, and deployment systems, and support production incidents and on-call rotations as part of the team rota.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business needs into technical solutions, working under the guidance of the Manila Team Lead.
  • Ensure that an acceptable level of documentation is maintained for delivered solutions.
  • Raise technological and process concerns in a timely manner, with particular focus on agility, security, privacy, and cloud cost.


What You Bring

  • At least 4 years of hands-on software engineering experience.
  • Strong Java, Spring Boot, and microservice engineering experience.
  • Experience with APIs and streaming technologies such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.
  • Experience with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB.
  • Good understanding of database concepts with strong SQL skills.
  • Excellent understanding of software design principles.
  • Ability to identify and provide alternatives to process or solution shortcomings.
  • Demonstrable experience in Agile development environments.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.


Nice to Have

  • Cloud experience in AWS (preferred), Azure, or GCP.
  • Experience with containerised workloads (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Knowledge of Front-End and/or Python development.
  • Experience with GraphQL, Debezium, or Terraform.
  • Experience with, or willingness to adopt, AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude).
