Purpose of the Role

The Power BI Report Developer is a specialist who takes validated, translated requirements from the business stakeholder and converts them into robust, production-ready Power BI dashboards and reports. The main focus of this role is Power BI, working exclusively with governed datasets and approved semantic models. The developer applies advanced Power BI, data modelling, and DAX expertise to design reports, implement precise business logic, and build accessible, user-friendly visuals that adhere to established design, definition, and governance standards.

While Power BI is the primary platform, experience supporting reporting and analysis in TM1 (IBM Planning Analytics) is desirable. The Power BI Report Developer drives business impact by delivering actionable insights, enabling data-driven decision-making, and supporting strategic priorities.

The role optimises report performance, troubleshoots issues at the model and report layers, and ensures consistency with the single source of truth. Operating within the organisations publishing and governance processes, they package, document, and promote reporting assets through the agreed Power BI Dashboard Publishing SOP, ensuring reliability, maintainability, and auditability over time. They collaborate closely with the Head of Performance Reporting and Analysis, BI platform/data engineering teams (for dataset readiness and service configuration), and the business stakeholder (for acceptance and UAT signoff), maintaining a strong focus on technical execution quality, performance, and compliance from build to release.

What are we looking for?

• Tertiary qualification in Information Technology, Data Analytics, or related discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
• Microsoft Power BI certification (e.g., PL-300 or equivalent) highly desirable.
• Proven experience in designing and building Power BI reports and dashboards using governed datasets and semantic models.
• Demonstrated ability to optimise data models and report performance for large or complex datasets.
• Hands-on experience with DAX, Power Query (M), and data modelling best practices.
• Exposure to data governance frameworks, publishing processes, and role-based security in BI environments.
• Experience working in a structured delivery environment, collaborating with analysts, data engineers, and business stakeholders.
• Familiarity with UAT processes, defect resolution, and change control.
• Data modelling (star schema, relationships, calculated tables).
• DAX for complex measures and KPIs.
• Power Query for data shaping and transformation.
  
  

• Additional credentials in data modelling, BI governance, or analytics platforms are advantageous.
• Experience working in a retail environment ideally in an omni-channel business.

• Provide clear handover and release notes for business stakeholders and support teams (known limitations, filter defaults, usage guidance).
• Document model logic, measures, sources, and design decisions in agreed templates to enable maintainability and team reuse.
• Champion shared design standards and reusable patterns across the reporting community to build capability and consistency.

• Support UAT with the business stakeholder and SMEs, incorporating feedback quickly and ensuring reports behave correctly across common filter combinations and role-based views.
• Deliver actionable insights that support business strategy and operational excellence.
• Ensure accuracy and trust by validating calculations and outputs against source systems and agreed business rules prior to release.
• Optimise for fast, reliable user performance (model sizing, calculation efficiency, query reduction, incremental refresh where appropriate.

• Build from governed datasets and approved semantic models to maintain a single source of truth and reduce duplication.
• Follow the Power BI Dashboard Publishing SOP, package PBIX and artefacts, attach testing evidence, and progress through the defined approval path to production.
• Adhere to the Report Request/Change Process, functional testing, SME verification, complete CR submission (changes, rationale, audiences), and orderly promotion.
• Escalate and collaborate on resolution of data integrity issues.
• Maintain comprehensive documentation for all reporting solutions, including logic, assumptions, and user guides.
• Participate in agile delivery processes, including sprint planning, backlog management, and retrospectives.
• Manage change requests, versioning, and provide user training and support as required.
• Proactively resolve defects and technical issues at the model and report layers, ensuring stability through regression checks on high-value assets.
  
  

• Continuously improve reports post-release using telemetry and stakeholder feedback to simplify models, enhance performance, and refine UX.
• Promote reuse and scalability by contributing components (measures, templates, design patterns) that reduce time-to-value for future builds.
• Align outputs to strategic priorities by delivering reliable, decision-ready reporting that enables leaders to act quickly with confidence.
• Pursue ongoing professional development and relevant certifications (e.g., Power BI, AI, data visualisation).
