The role

This is a rare chance to build. You'll be the face of Avvoka in Manila - the person who takes our culture and makes it real on the ground for a team of engineers and document automation specialists. It's a genuine generalist role: part leader, part lawyer, part hands-on document automation expert.

A core part of your work is legal interpretation and markup. You'll read raw client drafts and precedent documents and produce structured, annotated markup that defines exactly how each document should be automated and conditioned. Markup Editors are legal experts first - the markup you produce is the reference our Template Developers build from and our QA team validates against, so it underpins the quality of everything the team delivers.

Alongside that, you'll set the tone for how the office works and feels, and support our in-house lawyer on people and commercial questions as they arise. In 12 months you'll have shaped a team, embedded a set of values, and become the person whose legal judgement the whole automation team relies on.

What You'll Do

Lead and shape

• Act as Avvoka's country manager in Manila, translating our culture into local values and ways of working that the team owns.
• Build a strong, cohesive local team culture across engineering and document automation specialists.
• Operate across altitudes - one moment on office strategy, the next on the detail of a single clause.

Markup and legal interpretation

• Interpret client drafts and precedent documents, making expert judgements on clause-level logic, optional provisions, and variable content, then produce clear, structured markup in the department's standard format.
• Shape questionnaire structure and questions so they make sense for end users, and flag ambiguities in client drafts before markup reaches Template Developers.
• Join client calls to walk through source documents and clarify requirements, acting as a credible legal peer to their legal teams.
• Act as the reference point for markup interpretation for the QA and Template Developer teams, and maintain markup for templates already in production.

Support and collaborate

• Support our in-house lawyer on people topics as they arise.
• Support our in-house lawyer on commercial contract matters as they arise.

What You'll Bring

The ideal candidate would have:

• A qualified lawyer with real experience drafting or reviewing legal documents, and strong knowledge of at least one practice area (corporate, real estate, employment, finance, or commercial contracts).
• The ability to interpret complex legal provisions and translate them into structured, logic-driven annotations, with high attention to detail.
• A natural culture-builder who can take a set of values and make them real in a new location.
• The range to operate at multiple altitudes, and confidence leading structured client calls with legal professionals.
• Comfort with ambiguity and a genuine appetite for a broad, generalist remit.

Bonus Points If You Have

• Exposure to US and/or UK legal practice.
• Experience with document automation platforms (e.g. Avvoka, HotDocs, Contract Express) or familiarity with conditional logic and structured templating.
• Prior experience leading or setting up a team or office.
