Essential Job Functions

  • Prepares automobiles, trucks, and other power equipment bodies for painting by sanding, buffing, and preparing surfaces as necessary.
  • Operates spray gun and other painting equipment by selecting proper nozzles and making necessary adjustments to the regulating valves to spray paints on body and chassis and other surfaces of power equipment.
  • Spot sprays repaired parts and areas, matching and blending paint colors and textures.
  • Adjusts and cleans spray guns and other painting equipment and maintains them in serviceable condition.
  • Applies stripes, decals, letters and numbers on various types of automobiles, trucks, and other power equipment.
  • Performs detailed inspections of surface preparation, paint application, the clear coat, and the final work product of equipment repaired by contract repair vendors.
  • Drives a County vehicle to various locations throughout the County including driving equipment to contracted repair vendors.

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:

OPTION I: Completion of a recognized apprentice training program* of three years duration in painting automotive or other power equipment**

  • OR-

OPTION II: Four years of experience in painting automotive or other power equipment, one year of which must have been at the journey-level*** performing a full range of duties relating to the preparation of the surface to be painted and the operation of spray-painting equipment.

License

A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.

Physical Class

Physical Class III – Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

Other Requirements

Keen color perception.

Assignments in this class require the use of respirators such as when preparing surfaces and painting surfaces of automobiles, trucks, and other power equipment bodies.

Special Requirement Information

  • A recognized apprentice training program such as vocational schools, trade schools and community colleges. Examples of programs include: Inter-Industry Conference Auto Repair (I-CAR) and from the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
  • Automotive and other power equipment include but not limited to Heavy Duty Trucks, and Offroad equipment such as Wheel loaders, Back Hoes, Bulldozers and trailers.
  • *Journey-level experience applies to a person who is an experienced worker, not a trainee and is fully qualified and able to perform a specific trade without supervision.

THE COPY OF THE RECOGNIZED APPRENTICE TRAINING PROGRAM CERTIFICATE MUST SHOW THE COMPLETION DATE. CERTIFICATE WILL BE SUBJECT TO VERIFICATION BEFORE BEING APPOINTED.

EXAMINATION CONTENT

This Examination Will Consist Of TWO (2) Parts

PART I: A multiple choice and/or simulation assessment(s), weighted at 55%, assessing:

  • Achievement
  • Responsibility
  • Professional Potential
  • Teamwork
  • Following Instructions

MULTIPLE CHOICE AND/OR SIMULATION ASSESSMENT(S) ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

PART II
: An evaluation of Training and Experience, weighted at 45%, assessing:

  • Professional/Technical Knowledge of:
    • Operation, maintenance, and safe transportation of power and/or painting equipment
    • Automobile painting fundamentals
    • Surface painting preparation techniques
    • Inspection criteria and quality control standards for painted surfaces
  • Safety and Security Awareness
  • Problem Solving and Decision Making
APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE REQUIREMENTS AND ACHIEVE 70% OR HIGHER ON THE COMBINED SCORE OF PARTS I AND II IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE LIST.

Eligibility And Vacancy Information

Applicants who passed the assessment(s) are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months. We will use the list to fill vacancies in the Department of Public Works as they occur. We may use an alternative banding method in line with Civil Service Rule 11.01(D)
