General Summary

Works independently and follows established policies and procedures, performs scientific investigative research, and participates in carrying out research objectives of the Principal Investigator running the research lab. Assists in the development of new methodologies and prepares material for incorporation into publications or for use in laboratory procedures. Reads and evaluates literature in the field. Provides mentorship to other lab personnel and students on strong rigorous design for scientific processes. Servs as a resource person for standard operating procedures and best practices for laboratory processes.

Conducts complex experiments and collects and analyzes data using various statistical methodologies. Acts as a project leader and resource person for all lab personnel. Performs duties of Research Laboratory Associate III.

Principle Duties And Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the PI, assists in planning and designing double-blind, placebo-controlled experiments and sets-up equipment and conducts experiments following established protocols and research methodology; gathers data for analysis and interpretation of test results.
  • Independently conducts critical analyses and evaluation of laboratory data generated on patients, animal models or from in vitro assays and formulates a hypothesis from the relationships found. Plans and performs complex types of experimentation based on strong rigor and transparency which may use animals and experimental models.
  • Provides mentorship on scientific processes to other lab personnel and students. Serves as a resource person for standard operating procedures.
  • Assays samples (such as hormones and proteins, RNA, DNA, etc.), interprets and groups data (such as different experimental groups), and may prepare reagents (such as radioactive isotopes on hormones and proteins).
  • Processes and records samples, orders materials for assays, determines schedule for assays planned. Makes written progress reports and prepares summaries of data.

Education/Experience Required

  • Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university, in a scientific discipline appropriate to the research department. Masters Degree or Ph.D. in an appropriate field of science preferred but not required.
  • Five (5) years of laboratory experience in the scientific field pertinent to the area of research; or with a Master’s degree in an appropriate field of science, three years of laboratory experience in the scientific field pertinent to the area of research; or with a Ph.D. in an appropriate field of science, one year of laboratory experience in the scientific field pertinent to the area of research.
  • Requires a working knowledge of statistics, computers and appropriate software and research methodologies.
  • Requires manual dexterity to operate complex equipment.
