Director of Human Resources

The Company

A PE-backed national fire and life safety platform operating across five distinct operating companies, eight facilities, and multiple states including California. The platform serves diverse end markets — from commercial and industrial fire protection to marine and military vessel safety — and is in an active growth phase through acquisition and organic expansion. Revenue is approximately $30M with roughly 100 employees across locations in California, Florida, Texas, Arizona, and the Southeast.

The Role

This is a foundational HR hire. The person who takes this role will be the first — and for now, the only — dedicated HR professional in the organization that will help define and develop policy and procedures.

The priority is building the foundation that supports growth with labor and wage compliance across a multi-state footprint that includes California operations. From there, you build outward: policies, employee relations, onboarding, performance management, and the infrastructure that supports a growing platform.

The right person for this role wants to put their fingerprints on a growing business.

What You Will Own

  • Labor and wage compliance across all operating companies and states — with particular depth in California compliance requirements
  • HR policy development and implementation across a five-company platform
  • Employee relations — first point of contact for issues, concerns, and conflict resolution across a field-based, multi-site workforce
  • Onboarding and offboarding processes built from scratch
  • Performance management infrastructure within ADP
  • Compensation and benefits oversight — not the primary focus but needs a steady hand
  • Partnership with operational leaders across five distinct business units
  • Risk identification and mitigation across the full HR function
  • Foundation-building that positions the company for continued growth through acquisition

What You Need To Have

  • Multi-state HR experience with demonstrated depth in California labor and wage compliance — this is non-negotiable given the companys CA footprint
  • Experience as a first or solo HR hire — you have built from scratch before and know what that actually means
  • Background supporting field-based, multi-site workforces — industrial services, field technicians, trades, or similar environments strongly preferred
  • Comfortable operating without a team — you are the function until the business grows enough to support additional HR headcount
  • Hands-on by nature — policy writing, employee conversations, compliance research, onboarding paperwork — all of it lands on your desk
  • ADP experience preferred for payroll and performance management
  • Strategic enough to see around corners but grounded enough to do the work in front of you
  • Ability and willingness to travel to operating company locations as needed
