Essential Functions

Overview: To provide assessment, screening, planning, intervention, evaluation, counseling, management and/or referrals concerning the health and wellness needs of students for the purpose of minimizing absences due to illness, maximizing educational opportunities, and creating a healthy school climate.

Responsibilities

Compliance & Safety

  • Complete required hearing/vision screenings
  • Ensures all students are in compliance with immunization requirements
  • Collect, refill, and distribute emergency backpacks to teachers at beginning of year
  • Supports Board policy with respect to the exclusion and readmission of students in connection with certain infectious and contagious diseases
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records and documentation in accordance with all applicable laws Board of Education policies.

Student Wellness

  • Execute the daily operations of the School Clinic
  • Works collaboratively with health care providers, students parents, staff and community agencies to ensure access and continuity of care for students.
  • Performs nursing assessment for students who are ill or injured; provides appropriate first aid, care, intervention and referrals as needed
  • Develops individual wellness plans (IWP) when needed with specific goals, and interventions delineating School Wellness Specialist actions unique to students needs and for incorporation into the students individualized educational plan (IEP).
  • Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and others as needed to meet student health needs.
  • Monitors, tracks, and communicates student injury/illness to appropriate parties
  • Monitor and manage student check-ins as part of the students Tier 3 supports

School-wide Wellness

  • Develops trusting relationships across the School Community
  • Assist food service staff with breakfast/lunch when appropriate
  • Assist school administration in increasing student and family retention
  • Respond to emergency student behavioral needs and take appropriate actions
  • Support Building Leadership with interventions aimed at increased attendance (decrease tardies/absences) of students identified as "habitually truant" and/or "excessively absent"
  • Support McKinney Vento Homeless Representative in coordinating and arranging for child and family services to increase knowledge and access, including food pantries, shelters, and agencies that help with other basic needs
  • Supports sex education instruction in an appropriate format for the age group
  • Coordinate with outside agencies to offer services to students and families when appropriate
  • Works with students who are linked with the Cuyahoga County Division of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and are identified as at-risk and in need of services.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to deliver culturally competent service. Must be sensitive to cultural differences and able to incorporate that understanding into service provision. Able to engage students and families and work collaboratively with the child welfare and school systems
  • Other duties to be assigned by supervisors or other administrators.

Equipment

  • Uses medical equipment to provide health care to students/staff, including, but not limited to, blood glucose monitor, stethoscopes, thermometers, sphygmomanometers.

Qualifications Profile

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, symptoms, treatments, first aid, illnesses, injuries, nutrition, and related areas; and utilize in order to provide care for students.
  • Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications
    • (e.g., Word, Excel, Powerpoint, the Internet, Outlook, electronic mail).
  • Certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • STNA, CMA, or LPN Preferred
Salary: $31,395.00 - $35,581.00 per year
