Amentum is seeking a Marine Engine Mechanic to support a unique US Navy program on the island of Diego Garcia. The Marine Engine Mechanic will be responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of marine propulsion systems, watercraft, and waterfront support equipment in support of U.S. Government and U.S. Navy operations. This position performs mechanical work on gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and associated marine equipment while ensuring compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform maintenance, repair, overhaul, and preservation of gasoline and diesel marine engines, including two and four stroke outboard engines rated at 25 horsepower and above.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair marine propulsion systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, cargo pumps, valves, air compressors, welding equipment, and other marine mechanical components.
  • Perform preventive maintenance activities including lubricating, cleaning, servicing, inspecting, testing, and adjusting marine equipment to maximize operational readiness.
  • Utilize manual and computerized diagnostic equipment to identify equipment malfunctions and determine appropriate corrective actions.
  • Repair or replace mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, ignition, lighting, warning, and fuel injection system components using appropriate hand and power tools.
  • Interpret technical manuals, engineering drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, and blueprints to perform inspections, diagnostics, and repairs.
  • Conduct annual inspections and ensure all assigned watercraft meet operational, regulatory, and safety requirements.
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules for marine vessels and waterfront equipment.
  • Assist in developing fleet maintenance procedures and employee training programs.
  • Perform structural repairs, including heavy body repairs, sub frame repairs, fiberglass restoration, and gelcoat repairs as required.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, repair documentation, and equipment histories.
  • Ensure marine operations comply with applicable U.S. Coast Guard regulations, OSHA standards, CFR requirements, hazardous material regulations, host nation requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Follow all environmental, health, safety, and quality procedures during the performance of assigned duties.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned that are consistent with the nature and level of the position.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a Marine Engine Mechanic or Industrial Mechanic specializing in marine propulsion systems.
  • Technical certification from an accredited mechanical or marine trade school.
  • Knowledge of gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines, including two stroke and four stroke marine engines.  
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, and mechanical power transmission components.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair complex marine mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical manuals, schematics, blueprints, and engineering drawings.
  • Must be in possession of a valid passport and be able to travel internationally.
  • Passport must be valid for a minimum of one (1) year or more at the time of hiring.
  • Ability to obtain country-specific visas per the U.S. Department of State Foreign Clearance Guide.
  • Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain compliance throughout the duration of deployment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. 
  • Employees must read, speak, and comprehend English to the extent that they can perform the contract requirements and comply with installation emergency procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in an austere OCONUS (Outside the Continental United States) environment with a multi-national workforce
  • A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle. Valid country driver’s license. and passport.
  • Experience maintaining waterfront support equipment, service craft, remotely operated vehicles, and auxiliary marine systems.
  • Additional marine mechanical certifications or specialized training.

Working Environment

This position is located on Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), a remote overseas location supporting U.S. Government operations. Employees may work in office, industrial, warehouse, port, airfield, and outdoor environments and may be exposed to high temperatures, humidity, inclement weather, noise, dust, and uneven terrain. Work schedules may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours based on operational requirements.

Physical Requirements

 Requirements may include prolonged sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, lifting up to 25 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally, and working in both indoor and outdoor environments. Must be able to meet all medical, security, and deployment requirements associated with assignment to a remote overseas location.
