The Iowa Department of Transportation’s Office of the Director is looking for an Information Specialist 3 to serve as the agency’s Social Media and Content Specialist on the External Communications team. Shift Requirements : 40 hours per week Monday – Friday. Occasional nights and weekends necessary. Some travel. Flexible schedule and hybrid telework available.
In This Role, You Will
- Serve as the agency’s primary content creator, utilizing writing, photography, video, and sound bites to market DOT’s products and services and share compelling stories about the exciting work happening across the agency through social media, blog posts, and news releases.
- Collaborate with team members across the state to generate story ideas, conduct interviews, develop social media plans to support projects and observances, and do research to produce engaging and informative messages for external audiences.
- Serve as lead in operating the social media management tool for publishing posts, monitoring public comments, and analytics reporting.
- Develop strategies, create content calendars, and monitor the success of the DOT’s Transportation Matters Blog and social media presence.
- Collaborate with other state agency representatives on communication initiatives, such as traffic safety campaigns and severe weather responses, that benefit from partnerships, dual branding, and unified publicity efforts.
- Support communication needs across the agency, including writing and editing materials such as news and trade journal articles, speeches, and scripts; taking photos; collecting video and sound bites through the use of smartphones; and assisting with public relations and special events.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in journalism, public relations, graphic design, or communications and experience equal to four years of full-time work planning and developing content for dissemination through traditional media (newspapers, publications, radio, and television), websites, social media, and/or public speaking.
- All of the following (a and b):
- Four years of full-time work experience in planning and developing content for dissemination through traditional media (newspapers, publications, radio, and television), websites, social media, and/or public speaking; and
- A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in part a), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in journalism, public relations, graphic design, or communications equals one year of fulltime experience.
- Number two above, where twenty-four semester hours of postgraduate coursework in journalism, public relations, graphic design, or communications from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of the required full-time work experience.
- Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to 18 months of full-time work as an Information Specialist 2.
