Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret and analyse engineering, structural, and architectural drawings for reinforcing steel in residential, commercial, and larger community projects.
  • Calculate and prepare accurate quantities of reinforcing steel and accessories required for each project.
  • Prepare and maintain schedules, bar lists, and cutting lists for reinforcing steel to be issued to the factory and site.
  • Support estimating activities, including take-offs, preliminary pricing, and assisting with quotations for projects ranging from small residential jobs to large multi-thousand-tonne projects.
  • Work within clients existing systems and software for estimating, scheduling, and data entry (with training provided as needed).
  • Collaborate closely with the project manager, general manager, factory, and internal stakeholders to ensure information is accurate, timely, and easy for staff to interpret.
  • Provide clear written and verbal communication with internal teams and, where required, external customers to clarify project requirements or resolve queries.
  • Support continuous improvement of templates, processes, and workflows to make the estimating/scheduling function more efficient and scalable.
  • Assist with ad hoc detailing, data entry, and documentation related to reinforcing steel projects as required.
  • Maintain consistent and reliable communication by working within Australian business hours or ensuring a strong overlap with the Australian time zone.

Qualifications:

  • Background in engineering, construction, or a related technical field (e.g. Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Construction Management) - either through formal education or strong practical experience.
  • Experience in estimating and/or scheduling building materials, ideally reinforcing steel or similar construction products.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings, bar schedules, and technical documentation.
  • Solid understanding of basic construction concepts, particularly concrete and reinforcing steel in the building process.
  • Comfortable working with estimation/scheduling software and Excel-based tools.
  • Strong analytical skills, numerical accuracy, and attention to detail when calculating quantities and preparing schedules.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with the confidence to interact with internal stakeholders and, when required, customers.
  • Ability to work independently, manage workload across multiple projects, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Available to work within Australian business hours.

Preferred Attributes:

  • Direct experience in the reinforcing steel industry (estimating, detailing, or scheduling) for residential, commercial, or civil projects.
  • Prior exposure to the Australian construction market and local construction practices.
  • Experience working with remote or offshore teams and collaborating across time zones.
  • Proven ability to work on both smaller repetitive projects (e.g. standard residential jobs) and larger, more complex projects involving significant tonnage of steel.
  • A proactive mindset, with a demonstrated interest in learning client’s specific products, systems, and processes and growing with the business.
