Job Description
Job Purpose: Performs activities/tasks associated with law enforcement, examination, testing and issuing of learner and driving licenses and road worthiness certification through the application of applicable legislation.
Duties:
- Enforce the relevant traffic legislation
- Keeping abreast with the latest amendments to legislation, by-laws, regulations, policies and procedures
- Attending to traffic bottlenecks caused through accidents, breakdown or peak hour congestion
- Direct, divert, stop and control the flow of traffic by means of various methods and hand signals to communicate with drivers and pedestrians
- Assess traffic situations and incidents to determine the relevant course of action to ensure road safety
- Patrolling and observing the streets and suburban areas and identifying with non-conforming practices (illegal parking, speeding, unsafe transporting etc.)
- Performing specific traffic control and monitoring sequences at official functions/ public meetings and providing escort at funerals, political office bearers/ guests and dignitaries.
- Make public announcements with the loudhailer
- Set-up and perform routine checks, speed measuring equipment and enforcement of legislation
- Stopping vehicles and conducting inspection of driver licenses, vehicle registration and roadworthiness requirements and/or attending to specific infringement of road safety rules, etc.
- Executing warrants of arrests and preparing statements
- Completing and executing summons and submitting case files to facilitate prosecution and attending and witnesses specific actions in the court of law
- Assess possible impoundment of vehicles in line with traffic regulations
- Ensure that road safety is maintained through accurate and assessment, certification or licensing of applicants, drivers and vehicles satisfying the minimum prescribed requirements
- Ensure that the roadworthy test complies with the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996 and the SANS: 10047 – 2009 (Edition 6)
- Participating in disaster control activities, operating equipment and/or following instructions on the applications necessary to control the disaster
- Responding to public complaints/enquiries
- Completing procedural documentation (vehicle log sheets, time sheets, statements, inspection checklists, etc.) inserting the appropriate details
- Executing laid down procedures to test and determine the functionality of traffic/law enforcement equipment (speed measuring devices, etc.) and vehicles
- Responsible for the driving of municipal vehicle
- Ensure a well-maintained designated vehicle and the accurate capturing of kilometers in accordance with the laid down Procedures, Policies and guidelines
- Ensure health and safety compliance in accordance with laid down instructions.
Job Requirements
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12
- Traffic Officer Diploma
- Grade A: Examiner of Drivers Licenses
- Grade A: Examiner of Vehicles Certificate
- Valid Code A & EC Driver’s License
- No Criminal Record
- 2 years law enforcement experience
- Proficiency in at least two of the three official languages of the Western Cape
