Job Description

A Melting Executive in the foundry sector is a key management role, often called a Melting Manager or Melting Supervisor, responsible for overseeing all operations within the melting department. The position requires a deep knowledge of metallurgy, furnace operation, safety, and production management to ensure the consistent and efficient creation of high-quality molten metal for casting.

Key Roles And Responsibilities

Production management

  • Plan and coordinate production: Develop daily and weekly production schedules to meet output targets and customer deadlines.
  • Supervise operations: Oversee all melting activities, including furnace preparation, charging of raw materials, alloying, refining, and tapping of molten metal.
  • Manage resources: Optimize the use of raw materials, consumables (like fluxes and refractories), and energy to control costs and maximize efficiency.
  • Coordinate workflow: Work with other departments, such as production planning, molding, and maintenance, to ensure a smooth and timely flow of materials.

Quality control and metallurgy

  • Ensure material specifications are met: Verify that the chemical composition and quality of the molten metal meet precise metallurgical and customer specifications.
  • Monitor and control process parameters: Track and adjust critical furnace parameters like temperature, melting cycle time, and slag control.
  • Troubleshoot defects: Collaborate with the quality control team to investigate the root causes of casting defects, such as porosity or shrinkage, and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain quality records: Keep detailed logs of all melting operations, including heat reports, material usage, and test results.

Safety and environmental management

  • Enforce safety protocols: Implement and strictly enforce all health and safety procedures in the high-risk melting area, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Conduct safety training: Provide ongoing safety training to the melting team and ensure adherence to emergency procedures.
  • Manage hazards: Identify and mitigate risks associated with high temperatures, molten metal handling, and hazardous materials.
  • Ensure compliance: Adhere to all environmental regulations regarding emissions, waste disposal, and energy consumption.

Team leadership and development

  • Manage melt personnel: Lead, mentor, and supervise furnace operators, melters, and other team members, managing shift rosters and performance.
  • Provide training: Develop and deliver training programs to enhance the skills of the melting team and develop new trainee supervisors.
  • Promote improvement: Encourage employee engagement and suggestions for continuous improvement in safety, quality, and efficiency.

Maintenance and equipment management

  • Coordinate equipment maintenance: Schedule and oversee routine and preventive maintenance of melting equipment, including furnaces and ladles, to ensure maximum uptime.
  • Identify equipment issues: Actively monitor the condition of equipment and lead the troubleshooting of faults and breakdowns.
