Our client is a fast-growing, AI-native education infrastructure enterprise building population-scale digital solutions across India. Impacting over 150+ million users, the organization partners with state governments, enterprises, and social institutions to power learning systems, real-time analytics, and adaptive education infrastructure.

Role Overview

As the Backend Architect, you will serve as the technical lead with end-to-end ownership of all backend systems—spanning microservices architecture, API design, deployment, reliability, and technical mentorship. You will define the technical roadmap, build scalable distributed services to support millions of concurrent users, and lead engineering standards across backend squads. This role is part of a high-growth vertical build, requiring strong hands-on ownership, execution, and comfort with rapid iteration.

Key Responsibilities

• System & Microservices Architecture: Define service decomposition, inter-service communication protocols, failure-isolation strategies, and high-throughput/low-latency APIs.
• Distributed & Event-Driven Systems: Design scalable async workflows, real-time event-driven pipelines (Kafka), and integrate AI/ML inference services and public/third-party APIs.
• Database & Data Strategy: Lead schema design and database trade-offs across relational (PostgreSQL), NoSQL (MongoDB/DynamoDB), and in-memory caches (Redis).
• Reliability & Performance Engineering: Set SLAs/SLOs, circuit breakers, graceful degradation patterns, and performance limits.
• DevOps & Observability Standards: Drive Kubernetes-based deployment topologies, service mesh governance, CI/CD automation, and distributed tracing/alerting setups (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana).
• Technical Leadership & Quality: Govern test automation frameworks (unit, integration, contract, load testing) and mentor engineers on distributed systems best practices.
  
  

• 7–9 years of core experience in system design, application architecture, and backend engineering.
• Demonstrated expertise in building high-scale, reliable systems using modern open-source technology stacks.
• Hands-on experience with container orchestration (Kubernetes), DevOps/CI-CD pipelines, and cloud-native practices.
• Deep understanding of API protocols (REST, gRPC, GraphQL), queueing systems, and multi-tier integrations.
• Strong track record of leading cross-functional tech initiatives, setting architectural standards, and guiding backend engineering teams.
  
  

• Observability depth: Distributed tracing using OpenTelemetry and Grafana stack setups.
• Service mesh implementation: Experience with Istio or Linkerd for mTLS and traffic management.
• Security & Cost Engineering: OAuth2/OIDC, Vault, rate-limiting, and FinOps/compute optimization.
• AI Backend Integration: Experience handling async model serving and queue-based ML workflows.
