Job Description

A Commis Chef plays a critical role in the culinary world, acting as a support for chefs de partie, sous chefs, and head chefs. They are often entry-level chefs who work under the supervision of the chef to prepare food, maintain kitchen cleanliness, and ensure the kitchen runs smoothly. This position is fundamental to gaining experience and skills in a professional kitchen setting. The Commis Chef is responsible for assisting in the preparation and delivery of various dishes, contributing to the overall dining experience. Eager to learn and with a good understanding of the fundamentals, the Commis Chef takes initiative and shows passion for culinary arts, ensuring that each dish served meets the necessary quality standards. This role demands attention to detail, a willingness to learn, and a positive attitude toward teamwork and collaboration within the kitchen environment.


Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing mise en place and gathering ingredients for daily operations.
  • Support senior chefs in cooking, preparing, and plate presentations of meals.
  • Ensure quality and consistency of dishes served to the restaurant’s guests.
  • Maintain clean and sanitary work stations according to health and safety regulations.
  • Learn and understand kitchen policies, procedures, and controls for food preparation.
  • Actively participate in kitchen training to learn new techniques and methods.
  • Communicate effectively with kitchen and wait staff to ensure smooth service.
  • Assist in monitoring stock levels and notify chefs of inventory needs.
  • Ensure equipment and kitchen utensils are regularly cleaned and maintained.
  • Work collaboratively with other kitchen staff to ensure operating efficiency.
  • Assist in waste reduction by learning efficient food preparation techniques.
  • Adapt to a variety of cooking environments and adjust to food service demands.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in a similar role in a restaurant or hotel kitchen.
  • Basic understanding of professional food preparation and presentation techniques.
  • Capability to work under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong eagerness to learn and improve culinary skills and knowledge.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work well within a team.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Formal culinary training or a culinary arts diploma is highly desirable.
