Job Position Summary

The Director, Seafarer Talent Management, is responsible for developing and executing strategies to attract, retain, and develop our global seafarer talent pool across Fleet, with a focus on operations in India, the Philippines and China. Going well beyond maritime compliance, the role holder most oversee and implement global standards to the ensure the highest industry levels of seafarer competence and vulture of continuous improvement.


Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Design and implement talent acquisition, development, and retention programs tailored for shipping operations and shipboard marine staff, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Collaborate with senior cross functional management, regional HR teams, and vessel leadership to identify critical skill gaps, succession planning needs, and address workforce challenges.
  • Develop training and professional development pathways for seafarers and future ship-shore transitions, enhancing crew competencies, safety awareness, and career progression opportunities.
  • Monitor industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices to ensure the workforce remains compliant, competitive, and up-to-date with industry requirements and standards.
  • Steer and oversee performance management systems, career progression frameworks, performance review processes, succession planning, and leadership development for sea staff.
  • Engage with external partners, such as manning agencies and maritime academies, to enhance the talent pipeline.
  • Plan and conduct initiatives to foster regular ship-shore engagements.
  • Plan and lead initiatives to foster diversity, inclusion, and a culture of continuous improvement among shipboard teams.
  • Emphasize the global nature of the role, working across all geographies to develop consistent standards, ensuring high-quality seafarers for all clients regardless of location.
  • Strategically deploy and utilize a mix of global learning resources, balancing digital, blended, and face-to-face solutions for optimal impact, including effective use of our Training Institute and IMI.
  • Oversee the current seafarer online learning system (TOLAS) to ensure it remains fit for purpose over the medium term.
  • Conduct audits of training standards across all geographies to maintain compliance and quality.


Relationships:

INTERNAL:

  • Fleet Executive Directors and Product Directors for crew training matters.
  • Head, Talent Management (Shore) and Country maritime training focal’s for alignment of talent management principles and practices.
  • Other direct reports to ED FPD for reporting as well as addressing shipboard talent management and crew training matters

EXTERNAL:

  • International Labour Organization and MLC Control authorities
  • Merchant Marine authorities, Seafarer Training Institutes (Relevant Country)


Job Experience, Functional Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nautical Science, Marine Engineering or a related field. Master’s degree or professional maritime certifications are an advantage.
  • Proven experience in talent management or HR leadership within the shipping or maritime sector.
  • Strong cross-cultural leadership and change management abilities.
  • Exceptional analytical skills with a strategic mindset.
  • High standards of integrity and professionalism.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, global environment and manage multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across diverse teams.
