The Maryland Public Service Commission is recruiting a full-time Accountant I.

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Public Service Commission is seeking one full-time Accountant I to provide support with intermediate level accounting work for the Fiscal Division.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Examine, analyze, and interpret accounting systems, records, and reports by applying generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Process agencys Accounts Payable and expense accounts ensuring expenditures are properly recorded to the proper programs and objects.
  • Perform monthly Account Receivable reconciliation.
  • Assist with the review of monthly credit card logs and properly allocated expenditures.
  • Assist with the Gross Operating Revenue process for the agency.
  • Assist with the administration of the Environmental Surcharge.
  • Participate in the audit process by providing explanations of accounting procedures, providing financial schedules, and providing fiscal transactions supporting documentation.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: A Bachelors degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by three credit hours in auditing.

Experience: One year of experience examining, analyzing and interpreting accounting systems, records and reports by applying generally accepted accounting principles.

Notes

  • Candidates may substitute a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with thirty credit hours in Accounting and related courses, including or supplemented by three credit hours in auditing, for the required education.
  • Applicants who have met the requirements for admission to the CPA examination prior to July 1, 1974 will be considered to have met the educational requirement referenced above.
  • Possession of a certificate as a Certified Public Accountant or a Masters degree in accounting from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Applicants may substitute one year of professional auditing experience for the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the Accounting Officer classification or Financial Management specialty codes in the Accounting field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

Desired Or Preferred Qualifications

  • One year experience preparing account reconciliation.
  • One year experience processing account payable and expense reports.
  • One year experience processing journal entry.
  • One year experience allocating expenditures.
  • Knowledge and a practical understanding of electricity, gas, or telecommunications industries. *IT literacy, and proficiency in Microsoft Excel, e.g. creating formulas and conditional formatting.
