Job Description

The Staff Nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) plays a crucial role in the delivery of quality healthcare services to newborns requiring intensive medical attention. The position demands a high level of skill, compassion, and patience due to the delicate condition of the patients. A Staff Nurse in the NICU is responsible for providing round-the-clock care to newborn infants who are ill or premature, ensuring their immediate needs are met, and developing a caring relationship with the patient's family. This role involves closely working with neonatologists, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimum care for neonates. The NICU Staff Nurse must possess excellent communication skills and be adaptive to the dynamic and sometimes intense environment that a NICU presents.


Responsibilities

  • Monitor vitals and progress of neonates to provide timely medical interventions.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by attending physicians.
  • Use specialized equipment like ventilators and incubators for neonatal care.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to create and implement care plans.
  • Educate and support parents, helping them understand the condition of their newborns.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of patients' medical histories and treatments.
  • Ensure the NICU remains sterile and all safety protocols are adhered to rigorously.
  • Respond quickly in emergency situations to stabilize critically ill infants.
  • Participate in continuing education and training sessions to stay updated on NICU practices.
  • Provide direct assistance and support to doctors during medical procedures and rounds.
  • Promote a nurturing and supportive environment for families during their NICU stay.
  • Assess and document the developmental progress and recovery of neonates regularly.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing with state board of nursing.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit preferred.
  • BSN degree or equivalency from a recognized nursing program is required.
  • Certification in Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) is mandatory for this position.
  • Proven ability to handle stressful situations with calmness and efficiency.
  • Excellent communication skills for interaction with staff, families, and patients.
  • Strong critical thinking abilities to make sound medical decisions quickly.
  • Willingness to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in clinical settings.
  • A compassionate and patient-centered approach to neonatal healthcare.
