We are looking for an engineering manager to join our GAI Tech “Strike” team at the D. E. Shaw India office based in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, or Gurugram. The GAI Tech team is responsible for building infrastructure and applications of Generative AI (GAI) within the firm. The teams objectives consist of identifying the most productive GAI models, providing tools for sophisticated GAI-based applications, creating initial iterations of GAI tools, and offering support for technical staff involved with GAI projects. The focus of the GAI Tech team will be on improving areas such as developer productivity, process efficiency, making DESCO data easy to use with LLMs, and promoting generative AI for BU-specific adoption. Additionally, a significant aspect of GAI Techs role focuses on user education and promoting inter-departmental collaboration. The mission of GAI Tech is to serve as a catalyst for the research, development, and integration of GAI technologies, emphasizing user education and support for other technical teams within the organization. The team focuses on developing and integrating AI tools to enhance productivity and development which includes AI-powered assistants for writing and coding, tools for AI infrastructure, and custom AI components. GAI Tech is also dedicated to simplifying GAI utilization across the firm through optimized developer tooling, easier programmatic ways to integrate LLMs, and fostering ready-to-use applications for developers. Embracing open-ended experimentation and ongoing evaluation is another critical aspect of GAI Techs objectives, thereby supporting the teams continuous quest to advance GAI models and techniques. While the GAI Tech team is a research and development (R&D) group responsible for the development of firmwide GAI tech applications, the “Strike” team is a new sub team within GAI Tech that will work closely with groups across the firm to both, consult on ideas, and provide resources to directly implement the highest value projects.

WHAT YOULL DO DAY-TO-DAY:

In this role, you will be working on overseeing the end-to-end development of generative AI applications for the group you are working with. You will exhibit excellent learning agility to be able to work with a varied set of groups in a time-bound fashion and showcase excellent judgement in devising and implementing solutions for group-wide needs. You will be expected to exhibit a consultant’s mindset, be able to learn the group’s setup very well, propose the right solutions for their needs, solve complex technical challenges, ensure project specifications are met efficiently, and facilitate the rapid learning and implementation of new technologies within the group. Furthermore, you will also be expected to exhibit excellent productivity and demonstrate exceptional, and clear communication skills. You will manage and lead the team to ensure a productive working environment and clear communication. You will also lead the team on its goals, the focus will be on improving areas including developer productivity, process efficiency, making DESCO data easy to use with LLMs, promoting generative AI for BU-specific adoption, etc. People and project management is going to be a key part of the job role.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

Basic qualifications:

  • A master’s or bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related technical field with 7 to 18 years of relevant industry work experience
  • Proficiency in Python with robust coding and debugging abilities
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities and the capacity to acquire and apply new technologies quickly
  • Prior exposure to GAI projects and frameworks
  • At least 1 year of people and team management experience, leading a team of at least 2 members
  • Robust interpersonal and stakeholder management skills along with effective written and verbal communication abilities

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in managing and working in a global and diverse team
  • GAI academic qualifications/certifications
