Overview
GitHub is growing its Software Engineering team and we’re seeking experienced professionals to enhance our engineering team’s efforts. As a Group Software Engineering Manager, you will collaborate with stakeholders to determine feature requirements and enforce code review standards. The ideal candidate will influence project outcomes through your expertise in architecture design, software development, data analysis, and experience collaborating and communicating effectively with a diverse set of stakeholders.

- Engage with project managers and technical leads to determine and refine requirements for features and scenarios, ensuring alignment with customer needs and project goals.
- Lead cross team execution and delivery – lead discussions and create proposals for technical solutions, testing design hypotheses, and refining code plans to ensure robust architecture and high-quality outcomes.
- Drive architecture, quality and operational excellence for products, services, or features. Mentor team members in best practices for producing maintainable and extensible code.
- Identify and manage dependencies, risk and strategic tradeoffs.
- Collect, analyze, and integrate data to inform engineering decisions, driving product refinement and ensuring solutions meet performance expectations.
- Identify potential risks in projects and develop mitigation strategies to ensure successful project delivery and minimize disruptions.
- Partner across functions to align engineering with customer and business needs
- Hire, coach, and develop top engineering talent, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous learning.
A week in the life of a Group Software Engineering Manager at GitHub might consist of:
- Collaborating with other Engineering Managers to define the future of GitHub engineering and working together to implement that vision
- Collaborating with design, analytics, support, and product management to understand the problems we want to solve and exploring how we can solve them
- Digging into the most important issues the department is tackling by asking questions, creating plans, recognizing pitfalls, and raising concerns
- Discussing and collaboratively solving engineering and product problems with engineering collaborators in Slack or Teams
- Supporting company-wide initiatives
- Bringing key plans and execution ideas to the management team
- Mentoring other engineers at all experience levels
- Responding to issues and review requests from other teams at GitHub
- Reviewing your teammates Pull Requests and providing helpful feedback
- Serve as an engineering representative for critical customer conversations to discover what they love and what their pain points are
- Embedding in a squad periodically to enable others to tackle challenges and stretch assignments
- As a part of Engineering technical leadership, advising on key initiatives, gaps, and technical blind spots
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- 9+ years experience in software engineering, computer science, or related technical discipline with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python,
- OR associate’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Math, Physics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
- AND 7+ years experience in software engineering, computer science, or related technical discipline with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python,
- OR bachelors degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Math, Physics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
- AND 5+ years experience in software engineering, computer science, or related technical discipline with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python,
- OR masters degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Math, Physics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
- AND 3+ years experience in software engineering, computer science, or related technical discipline with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python,
- OR doctorate in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Math, Physics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field,
- OR equivalent experience.
- 5+ year(s) direct people management or leadership experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience setting technical direction across teams, growing managers and senior engineers.
- Experience working closely with product management, design, and other engineering teams to drive cross-functional projects and deliver high-quality products
- Experience in one or more scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Python, or a similar language)
- Experience with cloud environments and/or Cloud Native Compute Foundation (CNCF) concepts
- Experience working with both relational (e.g. mysql) and most importantly non-relational datastores (e.g. Cosmos) as well as operating Cosmos DB clusters at scale
- Experience working with Azure resourcing such as Azure Storage (blob and table particularly), Azure Redis Cache, Azure Data Explorer Clusters.
