Senior Software Engineer I

The U.S. Consumer Services team is responsible for our suite of consumer products, services, and experiences in the U.S., including our premium, cobrand, cash back and lending portfolios, Membership Rewards, Global Consumer Travel & Lifestyle Services, the Centurion Lounge network, Global Dining, U.S. Consumer Banking, Amex Offers, and best-in-class marketing programs across Customer, Prospect, and Partner channels. Senior Software Engineer I leads the full software development lifecycle, ensures technical excellence and adherence to best practices, mentors and coaches junior engineers, and collaborates cross-functionally to achieve organizational goals.

Responsibilities

• Mentors junior Software Engineers and cross-functional team of colleagues, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation
• Provides guidance and support to junior engineers, fostering professional growth and development within the team
• Directs the design, development, testing, and deployment of software applications and systems
• Oversees a variety of tasks, platforms, and technologies to expand new and existing software to meet changing requirements
• Writes automated unit tests to ensure correctness and stability
• Provides technical guidance to ensure adherence to best practices and coding standards
• Monitors software performance and implements improvements to optimize functionality
• Analyzes technical challenges and provides innovative solutions to enhance software quality and efficiency
• Collaborates with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and deployment of software solutions
• Collaborates and co-creates effectively with teams in product and the business to align technology initiatives with business objectives

Qualifications

Education Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and/or comparable experience; advanced degree preferred

Work Experience:

• 10+ years of software engineering experience (or equivalent level based on role requirements) with a strong focus on Java-based application development.
• Proven experience building and maintaining distributed, scalable, multi-tier applications.
• Experience in application design, development, testing, deployment, and production support.
• Experience working in cloud environments and modern software delivery practices is preferred.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze complex technical challenges and deliver scalable solutions.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, code quality practices, and DevOps principles.
• Experience with unit, integration, functional, and performance testing.
• Knowledge of distributed (multi-tiered) systems, algorithms, NoSQL, and relational databases
• Knowledge of the core tools used in the planning, analyzing, crafting, building, testing, configuring, and maintaining of assigned application(s)

Preferred Qualification:

• Experience leading small teams, mentoring engineers, or driving technical initiatives.
• Experience conducting architecture reviews and influencing technical direction.
• Basic Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Experience with containerisation and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Knowledge of event streaming platforms such as Kafka is a plus
